About this property
Frank Lloyd Wright Designed Home in Beautiful Location!
The only Frank Lloyd Wright home built in Hawaii is now available for your next vacation. This 3 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom architecturally significant residence will comfortably accommodate a family in a setting that is truly one-of-a-kind. Features of the home include a complete kitchen with upgraded appliances, an expansive living area (with a fireplace) and an outdoor lava-rock hot tub overlooking a seasonal stream and breathtaking mountain views. The bedrooms are located upstairs and float over the main level of the house. The master bedroom has superior views with a private bathroom, walk-in closet and private outdoor balcony. The second bedroom has its own private bathroom with a queen size bed. The third bedroom has two twin beds and the fourth bedroom is currently being used as an office and/or playroom. There is a grass yard in front of the home that is shaded in the morning, making for the perfect space to have an outdoor breakfast or to practice yoga.
This architectural gem was constructed on a 3-acre gated property between the Kohala Coast and the town of Waimea. This spectacular residence is perched over the Waiaka stream with ocean views and a perfect panoramic view of three of the Big Island's awe-inspiring volcanoes (Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai). Throughout the landscaped property guests will find secluded seating areas, a hammock and a small soccer field. Unique to this FLW home, guests are only a short 10 minute drive to beautiful white sand beaches, world class resorts and plentiful golf courses on the Kohala Coast. Also within a short drive is the country town of Waimea where bountiful farmers markets will supply you with all the fresh locally-grown ingredients you will need to make memorable meals during your stay.
HISTORY OF HOME: Completed in 1995 the home was commissioned by Sanderson Sims who partnered with Taliesin Associated Architects, John Rattenbury and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to bring the unbuilt plan to life. Originally conceived for the Cornwell Family in Pennsylvania in 1954, the 3,700 sq. foot passive solar hemicycle home embodies FLW's principles of organic architecture in which the structure blends harmoniously with the natural landscape. A series of towering glass doors topped with windows reveals floor to ceiling views along the entire span of the home. The second floor appears to float over the expansive curved main living area and is in fact suspended from the beams in the hidden steel frame circumnavigating the home.
The home has rounded walls made of coral aggregate block from Oahu, FLW's signature Cherokee-red concrete floors, and is built into a hill offering indoor/outdoor living that is sheltered from the consistent trade winds. It is furnished with licensed reproductions of original FLW-designed furniture including his Barrel chairs, Origami chairs from 1949, and Taliesin floor lamps. The home has extensive built-in seating per the FLW design, as well as custom built furniture to integrate with the home's round walls. A series of opaque skylights bring natural light into the home and warm lighting behind opaque glass illuminates the house at night.

Loved the property. Beautiful views, quiet, amazing architecture, clean and comfortable. The property was all we could have hoped for our family get together. Thanks for sharing your home with our family. Thanks to the management team for ensuring all the details were taken care of. Mahalo,

This was our 15th FLW rental, and it certainly did not disappoint. We enjoyed the remote feel of the location, while we also appreciated that it was within easy driving distance of everything we wanted to do. We also appreciated how well appointed the kitchen was—making it easy for us to cook dinner at “home” every day. We had plenty of space, and enjoyed evenings in the hot tub.
We highly recommend this property and hope to be able to return one day.
Everything was as indicated in listing but being there was even better. Amazing location amazing property original FLW furnishings but complimented with the luxury an original FLW home lacked. The master bedroom and bath were roomy and dreamy. The whole house is tastefully appointed. Room for each of the four of us to spread out and be comfortable. We went in mid December and temperatures were perfect. Of our five days there, we loved touring the island and a successful whale watching trip but agreed our favorite days and nights were just laying around the house and star gazing under the dark skies. Just minutes from Waimea where we found excellent dining and friendly locals. A tropical paradise fit for a king and/queen. Mahalo! #bucketlist
Our visit to FLW house exceeded our lofty expectations. The home is in an amazing location, is of an iconic design, and includes all required amenities. This space is a dream, the views are spectacular, and the vibe is serene. Memories forever.
This property and location are absolutely stunning and beautiful. Very peaceful and a beautiful location. Perfectly located between Waimea and the Kona Coast.
Our stay here couldn't have been better. The photos available online simply don't do this property justice. It is exquisite. The design of the house harkens to a bygone time with genuine authenticity and yet there is a timeless quality to the design that never makes it feel dated or no longer relevant. So many spaces for family and friends to spread out and enjoy but also so many thoughtful touches that make the home feel intimate and comfortable. If the opportunity ever arises, we would not hesitate to stay here again.
We enjoyed our stay so much. The home has so much to look at and the view of the valley to the water is beautiful. Our family of 4 was very comfortable.
The home is so unique and very comfortable to live in. The spot is spellbinding. Never tired of waking up to the three Mountain View. Hope to stay here again some day.
The home is absolutely beautiful. The entire process was super simple and the staff very responsive to communication.
My only wish is I had more time!!
I have been a Frank Lloyd Wright fan for years ,so to spend some time in one of his places was thrilling! My daughter,son-in-law and one of their college classmates (all Texas Tech architects) really enjoyed their visit and experience. The owners have done an excellent job of maintaining the spirit and integrity of the place. It was a memorable stay to say the least.

Exceeded Our Expectations!
I can't say enough about this incredibly unique home - the history, architecture, setting - all exceeded expectations. How fortunate we are that the owners welcome others into their home! It is in a very private setting with beautiful views of the area. All three of my boys said they would much rather return to the house at the end of the day and play football in the backyard, as opposed to a hotel or a house on the beach. We have rented a number of homes in the past for our vacations and this one is at the top of our list! Make sure to review the entire owner's manual on arrival to learn how to maximize your enjoyment of the home and area. Jennifer was great in making arrangements for us. If we ever return to the Big Island, I hope this home is still an option.
My graduation from architecture school was a long time ago, and even though I changed careers after a short time working in the field, I held on to my love of architecture. I have visited other FLW buildings over the years, but never dreamed that I would get a chance to stay in one of his designs even for a short time. This house wasn’t built during his lifetime and some might find that less desirable, but take it from me, it is still a sublime experience. There were six of us staying in the house, four adults, a 12yo and a 14yo; so we maxed out the accommodations. Everyone commented on the fact that it just felt special… even the non-architecture geeks. The house is very well outfitted and the grounds are beautiful. It seemed much more like a family house than a vacation rental. The location is near Waimea, which we really liked. Waimea is not a hotbed of tourist activity and felt like a place for locals. That said, we felt welcome everywhere we went. The property is 10 minutes or so away from resorts and beaches; convenient but not part of the hubbub. The house has no A/C, but sits at an altitude of about 1800’, so even during the summer it is comfortable. We stayed the third week of June and the temperatures were upper 70’s for highs with lows of around 60°. It felt perfect. The house has a good view of the coastline and the mountains. From the photos on VRBO, I wasn’t sure of the coastal views, but they were great. We loved it and are already planning our return!
The house was even more stunning and peacefull than on the pictures. The view and the peacefulness from the garden is absolutely priceless.
Couldn’t have hoped for a better place.
Thank you so much.
Hope to be back soon!

Total Delight
Our group of five thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Frank Lloyd Wright house near Waimea — what a treat to spend several days living in a space designed by the master instead of just visiting a FLW house or museum for a couple hours. So much fun detail to absorb and what a wonderful view out over the valley both day and night — turn out all the lights and the stars just glow with beautiful framing by the crescent roof. It’s a magical spot.
South Kohala were excellent hosts as well — very responsive to my emails, friendly and helpful at all times, and the check-in and check-out processes were easy and quick.
I highly recommend this experience and hope to return someday.

A singular experience
This house is the real deal. We loved our stay, and woke up every morning to take photos of the sunrise over Mauna Kea. Amazing.

A Gem on the Northern slope of the Big Island
We booked this property for a family vacation in November 2014, and the home was magnificent. Set just west of Waimea, it is about 2500 feet above sea level. The late afternoon breezes from the East would roll in with a pleasant mist, and climate-wise it was similar to that of Northern California. On our arrival through a driveway lined by towering foliage, we were greeted by five wild turkeys bouncing about the lawn and even bounding onto the roof. Alas we were unable to catch the slowest one for Thanksgiving dinner.
Entry into the home via the garage's entrance, one is embraced by the structure, almost claustrophobically as was one of Wright's features in his Taliesen homes -- he wanted guests to be welcomed and enwrapped on arrival. From there through the dining area, the layout opened up to reveal the large expanse of the living area with Wright furnishings including barrel chairs, origami chairs, and classic mission style furniture and thoughtful lighting. The lawn was putting green worthy and stepping toward the Eastern edge of the house, one finds a welcome hot tub. The bedrooms on the upper level were classic Wright, and decking from the master lent southerly views. This home is quite private with the front of the home facing the Keanuoimanu stream which can be heard trickling toward the sea. It is within 10-15 minutes' drive to beautiful beaches on the Kohala Coast, and travelling to Hilo and Volcanoes' National Park were picturesque jaunts over the Saddle road or along the Mamalahoa Highway. On a trip to Mauna Kea Observatory Visitor center where astronomy enthusiasts set up telescopes at nightfall and are generous in sharing their copes and knowledge of the night skies we took the Saddle Road and witnessed a five minute+ sheep stampede crossing from North to South, so do be careful with driving here at night [unless you want mutton]. We did not spot any donkeys, however, caution signs notwithstanding. Merriman's restaurant in Waimea was a great spot to wind down our visit the last night on the island and is but 10 minutes away. Excellent meal and stellar service.
The house is well appointed:fully stocked cookware, dishes, washer/dryer units, and linens. Property management were always available, prompt and courteous. [She came out to check out a brush fire on the hillside in front of the house which was addressed by the local volunteer fire department. not a common occurrence rest assured.] A Wright afficianados dream.
