About this property
A tranquil, wildlife haven with stunning loch and mountain views - pet friendly.
Set on the shores of Loch Duich, this delightful cottage is one of two, hundred-year-old, forester's cottages and plus a cabin standing in isolation and accessed by a single track road four miles from the A87. Enjoying a high degree of privacy, Saraig offers the best of both worlds basking in peace and quiet yards away from the water's edge, yet is only 25 minutes from the Kyle of Lochalsh which has a supermarket, medical centre, swimming pool and train station.
Within easy driving distance are a couple of restaurants, a welcoming bar, cafés and Kintail Crafts, which apart from being a craft shop, is well stocked with groceries.
Surrounded by mountain and loch, the ever-changing views from this cottage are truly spectacular making it a perfect retreat for those who want to get away from it all. On a clear night, the milky way is visible and in the distance, far enough away not to cause light pollution, the illuminated Eilean Donan Castle shimmers in the dark.
Saraig is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers. It's wildlife-orientated gardens host a huge array of birds, including housemartins and swallows who revisit their nests in the eaves year after year. We supply birdfood and peanuts for all the birds and occasionally fatballs. There are pine martens and badgers, who regularly visit the back garden and are a delight to see. Peanuts are supplied for them. The pine martens also like peanut butter. Their food has to be put on the windowledge the other side of the kitchen table otherwise the badgers eat it all. Any contributions in the form of fatballs and peanut butter sandwiches are gratefully received. Seals, porpoises and otters are sometimes spotted from the lounge window along with a variety of seabirds, herons, divers and waders. Loch Duich is a sea loch and permission to fish it is not needed.
With 22 Munros in the area and miles of coastline, Saraig is perfect for hillwalking and rambling. It is also ideal for cycling, sailing, and touring. Whatever your passion, returning to this warm, welcoming, homely cottage is the perfect end to a perfect day.
There is so much to see and do in the area a week is hardly long enough. Within easy reach is Eilean Donan Castle, the iron age brochs of Glenelg, Attadale and Armadale gardens, the dramatic Falls of Glomach, plus boat trips galore including a glass-bottomed boat trip in Kyle of Lochalsh and Calum's seal trips in Plockton. At certain times of the year there are also whalewatching trips. There is a wide variety of walks from the challenging Five Sisters of Kintail and Saddle to a gentle stroll along the shores of Loch Duich right outside the front gate. Wander through deserted glens, alongside bubbling burns, through dense forest, past cascading waterfalls (numerous after heavy rainfall). The township road Saraig stands on is a very quiet, single track lane which gradually peters out. The walk along the lochside is wonderful, with stunning views, lapping waves and the chance of spotting otters and seals. Herons frequent the area and from time to time eagles, deer and dolphins can be seen.
The interior of this cottage is charming with a log burning stove at its heart. This spacious yet cosy cottage sleeps 6 people over 3 bedrooms - 2 king and 1 twin, two bathrooms, lounge, dining room, kitchen and pantry. The beds are wonderfully comfortable with good quality bedding. All bedrooms enjoy views of the loch.
All in all if you want a relaxing, tranquil holiday then Saraig is ideal for your needs; if you want a holiday packed full of outdoor activities then Saraig is perfect for the job; if you want to visit castles, historic sites, gardens, and tour much of the northwest highlands and islands, then Saraig is the base for you. Finally, if you love wildlife and nature, then Saraig is perfect.
One last note - it is possible to get married anywhere in Scotland including on the beach, and this is precisely what two of Saraig's guests did. With a piper piping the bride from the cottage, it was a fairytale wedding as the sound of the bagpipes echoed around the mountains. The bride herself described it as magical.

This is a wonderful property, very family friendly in a beautiful setting. Paula is a wonderful host and not only had nice things waiting for us when we arrived, but she also was accommodating in heavy snowfall. We are absolutely going to come back to this charming, beautiful, cottage in a gorgeous part of the highlands. What a gem!
The most beautiful peaceful setting with amazing views and wildlife all around. Excellent communication from the hosts. The cottage itself was nice and clean, a little bit of a quirky layout but to be expected for a 100 year old property.
The house is beautifully situated with a fantastic view. The five of us spent a wonderful week here. For a walk with our dog we either took the very quiet street or the approximately 1.5-hour circular path through the forest above the house. Communication with the very friendly hosts, Paula and Rob, was also excellent. We would love to return.
We were absolutely delighted when we arrived at the cottage. It delivered on wildlife and peace and quiet. The views were absolutely beautiful; we had a great week .
Lovely stay over christmas and new year. Great location and plenty of quiet walks with our dog.Hosts went above and beyond even putting up a christmas tree for our stay and providing welcome gifts. Great places to visit nearby and lovely walks with great views we would highly recommend anyone to visit .
A perfect place for a few days of peace, wildlife and ever changing loch views. The cottage was very spacious, warm and comfortable and we enjoyed the special welcoming touches provided by the owners. A great location for walks and drives in the surrounding spectacular scenery.
Really enjoyed our stay here. Nice and cozy. Perfect for us and the dogs. So great to have Pine Martins, a Badger and a vast array of birds outside the kitchen window.
My eldest son loved sitting out the front on the bench next to the Loch gazing at the stars.
Great stay.
Beautiful location on the shores of Loch Duich. Numerous places a short distance away to visit or go hillwalking, paddleboarding etc. Isle of Skye accessible in around 30 minutes.
Property was very peaceful, comfortable and well equipped with a fantastic array of flora and fauna on our doorstep.
Would thoroughly recommend.
Perfectly situated for us, quiet enough for us to enjoy the wildlife literally on the doorstep, but not too far to travel to other places of interest. Skye being one of these. Also breathtaking walks right outside this lovely spacious but cosy cottage
This cottage is in a stunning located, surrounded by mountains and next to a sea Loch. Only stayed for a week but I wish it had been for longer.
Brilliant place for wildlife, seeing Pine marten, badgers, bats, porpoise and seal and many birds.
The cottage was very clean, cosy and spacious with plenty of windows for natural lighting.
Paula, the owner was such a lovely person and made sure we had everything we needed.
I will be returning next year.
Came here in 2019 & fell in love with the place, inside & out. Nothing has changed , still the beautiful place to forget all your worries & chill. Truely stunning scenery outside your door, which you would never tire of. Thank you Paula for letting us stay again in your beautiful place. Loved the open fire, the birds in the garden & the ease of it all ; I’m sure we will be back !
We had the most wonderful time at Saraig. Within an hour of our arrival we had a pinemarten on the kitchen window sill and two badgers outside the back door. The views over the loch were stunning and the cottage was warm and very well equipped. The beds were amazingly comfortable and the furniture so in keeping with a highland cottage. We will definitely return
Spacious cottage with everything you need. Bedrooms spread apart which we liked. Small garden to the back which is enclosed but does have steps. Also steps up to the main entrance. Cottage was warm and inviting but a little tired in decoration. It overlooks a loch so fabulous location about a 30 minute drive from the Skye bridge. Owner good communicator and helpful.
Spacious, pet friendly cottage in stunning loch-side location with mountain views
Paula and Rob were the perfect hosts ensuring our stay was as comfortable as possible. The cottage is essentially in two sections, each with its own bathroom & meeting in the kitchen which allows plenty of space for everyone. It was very clean & peaceful with the sound of the birds & loch heard when the windows were open. We were so lucky with the weather, perfect sunshine and clear blue skies for 2 weeks (we have never experienced this in Scotland before!) so we could explore the area from the Brochs in Glenelg to Dunvegan Castle on Skye. Sandaig bay was stunning with white sands and turquoise sea, and from the top of Sgurr an Airgid we could see the Cuillins and 360 clear views of the mountain tops. This is a wonderful place to stay for a fabulous holiday, I would certainly recommend it.
What a wonderful place! From the most fabulous setting and views, to the peaceful & cosy cottage. We had such a lovely stay after settling in with a very thoughtful welcome package and visits from our inquisitive neighbours the badgers, pine martens & birds. Countless lovely places to visit nearby & further afield on Skye. Great local walks including along the loch to the broch & woodland walks at Balmacara. We can recommend the Dornie Inn (& the Clachan in Summer) for good food locally. Thank you to Paula & Rob for a wonderfully relaxing stay. We hope to stay again.
We had the best week in Scotland and will definitely return. The location of the property is fabulous. The scenery and wildlife were amazing. The Pine Martens came every night for the jam butties and eggs we put out for them. We even saw a Golden Eagle flying overhead. Walk down the path towards the Castle and there are seals on the rocks.
Paula could not have been more helpful and accommodating.
Sorry we could only stay for a week .
Saraig is a hidden gem, in a lovely quiet part of the Highlands. The loch views are beyond description. Highly recommend a loch swim if you ’re feeling brave (and have a wetsuit!). The house itself is full of character and with every possible home comfort. Plenty of places to visit nearby, easy to get to local amenities, restaurants etc. Top tip: if you can afford to buy a trail camera (around £50), you will capture some amazing footage of the pine martens and badgers in the garden at night! Thank you to our hosts, who were so welcoming and helpful. Can’t wait to come back!
A superb week exploring the local area and Skye. What made it was the huge array of wildlife on our doorstep and back garden! Porpoises and Sea Otters in the Loch, all manner of shore wading birds, plus loads of garden birds. The best bit is definitely the Pine Martens and Badgers who visit every evening! And keep an eye out for the gorgeous bats who pay a visit too.
The house is absolutely perfect, everything you can possibly need, plus a wee bottle of Whisky to enjoy. 10/10 for us, thank you for everything Paula!
The cottage has everything you need and the views with are stunning! The evening arrival of a Pine Marten and a badger added to its magic and there are so many garden birds to watch from the kitchen window. The cottage is placed so that you can access a great latte at Chocolates of Glenshiel or drive to Glenelg and experience a great pub but it is quiet and remote. We enjoyed plenty of walking despite mixed weather and loved discovering the beauty of 'the Ring of Bright Water' Sandaig. Paula and her husband were responsive and helpful hosts even when the heating failed (one of those things that happens to us all!) They were great!
A wildlife haven with the most spectacular loch and Highland views
We had an amazing week at Saraig Cottage in Kyle. Breathtaking views with incredible wildlife, it really is a special place. We were greeted with a Pine Marten on arrival and got to enjoy Badgers and Pine Marten each night of our stay. We saw Porpoise in the Loch, Sea Eagles overhead, Red Deer on the hills and a large variety of other birds and wildlife. The walk up Sgurr an Airgid mountain opposite the cottage is challenging but rewarding.
The cottage itself is quirky and comfortable with everything you need. Paula and Rob were gracious hosts and made us feel most welcome.
I'd highly recommend this cottage and location to anyone who appreciates a tranquil location with big views and exceptional wildlife. We'll be adding to favourites and hoping to return again soon!
The property is lovely. A comfortable and spacious 3 bed semi detached chalet bungalow in a superb position directly overlooking Loch Duich and the surrounding mountains. Generous parking for two cars on the driveway. The direct views of the loch and mountains from the frontage (and particularly the main bedroom at first floor) are genuinely exceptional. We visited over Christmas and the central heating is very good complimented by an open fire in the living room. The kitchen and bathroom fittings are somewhat dated but this doesn't detract from the property as it has all required for a very comfortable stay. The property is approached from a single track road which runs along the waterside for a couple of miles but this is easy to navigate, surfaced and gritted and so did not cause any access problems for us in Winter. The property is set directly fronting this small access road and a few feet from the lochside and a small stoney beach. Whilst set apart from several other houses on this road it is a great balance of getting away from it all without feeling very isolated. Good access to Skye and surrounding mainland attractions. The owner is very friendly, kind and efficient and seemed to genuinely care about our stay. A week in this property for our family of six didn't disappoint, was good value and it lived up to and in several areas exceeded our expectations. The description is accurate. Thank you Paula.
