  • Located on St. George Hill, over-looking the city of Lviv, the church was the perfect target for destruction in the past. At least two versions of the St. George Cathedral were built before the final construction of the church as it is seen today. The Cathedral of St. George became the mother congregation of the Greek-Catholic religion in Ukraine. The St. George Cathedral in Lviv, is home to one of the most treasured relics, which was brought to the cathedral by Bishop Jiseph Shumlianskyi in 1674. It is the Icon of the Virgin Mary, and is a spectacular and preserved artifact. The interior was decorated with luxurious embellishments created by the local artistic talents of Lviv. Pinsel, the sculptor of the cathedral, created the spectacular St. George (known as the Dragon Slayer) statue. The St. George statue can be viewed in the attic of the cathedral, while the intimidating statues of St. Athanasius and St. Leo protect the portal. Renovations to the St. George Cathedral took place in the 1996, restoring the original beauty of the cathedral. Tourists, visiting this amazing historical masterpiece will not be disappointed. Over and above the cathedral, visitors can also visit the belfry, walk through the peaceful gardens or enter the final resting place of many important figures of the past in the tombs below the cathedral.

  • Lovely view of old Lviv from the top of the tower in the center of Ploscha Rynok. That's the Latin Cathedral, one of the oldest still-active churches in the city. To climb the tower, go up the first four flights of stairs to the ticket desk. The way is clearly marked with signs in multiple languages, including English. At the desk, pay 10 hrivna and then keep climbing up, up, and up until you reach the open deck at the top of the tower. Then enjoy the view!

This hotel is fabulous! So many touches you don't usually find except in the most luxurious hotels. The bathroom floor was heated! The room had bathrobes and slippers. The restaurant was small but the food was amazing! The staff was very friendly. I know Ukraine is currently at war, but you wouldn't know it staying here. What an oasis!

Perfect in all ways..we love clean and modern style and this is it. Recently renovated and well kept with modern furnishings. Simple but nice complimentary breakfast. Our only comment would be about quality of towels and pillows.

The Hotel Maestral Welcomes You!

I am in Ukraine to do volunteer work. Before moving to a flat in the city centre, my introduction to Lviv and to Ukraine was the gracious staff at the Hotel Maestral. I walked in the door after a long bus ride and border crossing on Saturday night. I was soooo tired. So, when I walked in the door, and the kind woman behind the desk greeted with, "We've been waiting for you!" and a smile, it warmed my heart. My room was well-appointed, and the renovations are stunningly beautiful. Add 3.5 meter ceilings (think...they were spacious), a king bed, and reliable internet for my digital nomad work, and it was a quite comfortable fit. Breakfast is included and features fresh vegetables, cheeses, scrambled eggs, sausage, fried potatoes and bread, along with a solid coffee machine with the usual choices in Eastern Europe. But the people at the hotel, and their general friendliness and amenability to offer encouragement to a visitor from halfway around the world whose Ukrainian is rudimentary at best, was the most important thing of all. Of course, Lviv itself is a beautiful European city, really a must-see, especially now, when a visit adds to the economy of the freedom's greatest ally--today's counterpart to Churchill's Britain in 1940. So, a huge "дякую!" to the management and staff of the Hotel Maestral in Lviv, Ukraine! You must make it part of your next visit to Ukraine!

This is a clean hotel with large rooms. The breakfast was simple but tasty. The biggest challenge staying here is there are two windows up high in certain rooms and there is no way to darken the room. The roll down screens for the windows are see-through so it does not block the light at all. If I stayed here again, I would certainly make sure I did not get one of these type of rooms as they have other types. I would give 7 or 8 out of 10 for this reason.
