Bounded by the Tasman Sea, the mighty Mokihinui River and beautiful ancient bush, our seaside accommodation is a peaceful place to relax and enjoy time away from the busy life and provides a great base to explore our stunning region.
Centrally located in the Northern West Coast, Gentle Annie is near places of interest where day trips will get you north to the magnificent Oparara Limestone Arches, the Kahurangi National Park, the Heaphy Track and south to the Chasm Creek and Charming Creek Walkways, Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, the Denniston Plateau and the Cape Foulwind Seal Colony. Enjoyed our stay at Cabbage Tree Cottage
, smaller than the promo photo's upstairs but still very comfortable. Have left a note with recommendations on the table. Thank you
Disappointed to find no bedding and towels, read through the listing again and still no info regarding these. May need to be more clear in your listing. Having come from the uk we did not have any ,so was very surprise not to have any at the cottage.Otherwise a pleasant stay and would return with towels and bedding. Cheers.
It’s in a beautiful location. Sea views and abundant native bird life. We also hired a hot tub for the time we were there, brilliant idea. Had a fish at the Mokihinui river mouth, caught a Kawai. We went exploring as far up as Karamea, everywhere we went we were greeted by the most friendliest of people.
Peaceful cottage in a great location with lots of bush walks nearby. Living area upstairs is very cosy with a gas fire and lovely outlook. Had a great long weekend break and would definitely visit again. Bring all the gear you need as kitchen equipment is just the basics and no games, books etc.
Got an email saying we didnt have to check in at the office and to just go up to the house. It was perfect for us. We didnt see or talk to anyone our whole stay. Absoulte bliss.
Such a beautiful place with an amazing view. The property was so clean and lovely.

Awesome relaxing time
Apart from getting confused about which property we were in and not being able to get hold of anyone, once sorted, this was an absolutely beautiful part of the West Coast I can see myself going back to again in the near future. Stunning views and great property to stay in. Thanks
Cool private remote location with the constant low roar of the waves..Recommended ! Great stones on the beach . Cowshed cafe over at the camping ground 1k down the road is very cute. Note Charming Creek Walkway is closed at its most impressive end due to a large rockslide..see DOC website. (As per previous reviews the bathroom door needs fixing . Note the TV is very small and freeview only and signal is lost in bad weather. But most people are not there for the TV of course!)
This property is AMAZING, the photos don't do it justice. Super clean, comfortable, warm and cozy. Really good layout. Loved the location, loads to explore, the beach, maze lookout and the hidden beach beyond... absolute paradise! Perfect end to our trek across the Heaphy. Will definately be recommending to friends and whanau and would love to come stay again. Thank you!
Everything I was hoping it would be. Fantastic location with bush in the back and beach at the front, fantastic views, total privacy. The bach is gorgeous, clean and comfortable and is very well equipped. I was able to bring my dog who also loved the beach. Will definitely stay again.
We had a wonderful time over the weekend, booked for 2 nights and took our dog who loved it. Kitchen had all the utensils we needed as he is a chef.
The gas fire was fabulous and the views breath taking.
We had the beach to ourselves where we made a fire and watched the sunset.
We will be back for sure.
We had a good time in the house but a couple of things could be better :
- we payed for linen but nothing was there when we arrive. Then the management brought a box full of linen and we had to make the beds ourselves.
- on the home away app, it was specified that the house was provided with internet which was not the case at all... it was quite annoying for us as we planned to have internet... we were then told that internet was available at the reception (5mn drive from the house)... but when we tried there, the network was not working...
- we found the house to be quite charming but we really think that a few amenities outside on the terrace or outdoor in the small garden could be great... like a few chairs or table... the only one that is outside is very old and just supporting the barbecue.
- we think that the sofa could be washed as it’s not really appealing right now, especially for the one who is sleeping in.
But overall the location is nice and the proximity with the beach is enjoyable.
We loved the remoteness of the property. The views were spectacular of the sea. Lots of firewood to keep us warm. Would have liked some condements, e.g. tea, coffee, sugar, baking or cooking needs e.g. flour, salt/pepper, oil. You can't pop out to a shop if you forget to pack an item. Overall a wonderful place to stay.

Brilliant place to stay
We had a great time staying there.
It was clean and tidy with everything one would want in a place to stay.
The location was ideal - within a minute's walk to the beach.
The gas heating and cooking made a real difference, the place was warm throughout our stay.
We managed to catch a Kahawhai at the river mouth within 15mins of arriving - that was the perfect start to our break.
We will definitely stay again.
