Centrally Located Explorers Hale
The ULTIMATE rainforest experience while providing comforts to make your stay enjoyable. Live in traditional Hawaiian style homes! We have strong wifi and grid power so there is never a shortage. We also feature a 10,000-gallon rainwater catchment that is ALWAYS full! Enjoy rainforest showers with endless hot water! Our cabins are newly updated with added comforts. Although we have everything you will want to be comfortable, we have done so in a sustainable way and have converted to solar.
This rustic, jungle themed jungalow with exposed stud walls and built in shelves for a light, open feel, features a mini fridge, propane heater, private full bathroom and covered lanai. There is one queen bed in the cabin. We have another listing that will also sleep two. The cabins are right next to each other making it ideal for groups!
There is a kitchen on property shared with one other rental perfect for making friends while traveling! The kitchen features a brand new washer, dryer, stainless steal sink and is stocked with all the cooking supplies you will need. The room, lanai and bathroom are private, only the kitchen is shared and in another structure. Even though the bathroom is outside, it is placed where there is plenty of privacy still.
We provide a detailed welcome packet with a variety of mostly free but some paid must see/do activities on the island that our past guests have loved!
HOT TUB We have a hot tub deck with a plug n play spa. Use of this is available for $15 extra PER night of your stay, regardless if used every night or not. You will need to let us know ahead of time if you plan to add this. The hot tub deck is communal space.
ANIMALS We have a 501(c)(3) dog rescue on property and outdoor cats. People that stay with us, should like animals.
TOURS At night your ears will be greeted by the forest with sounds of coqui frogs. Many people love them. Please search for Bathing Suits and Rain Boots on YouTube to find a video of what our property sounds like at night. Our channel also features videos of tours we offer and shorts with educational island facts! Our tours include off the beaten path adventures ranging from sunrises and geothermal ponds, to hikes that lead to waterfalls!
BEACH GEAR We have surf boards, boogie boards and snorkel gear available for guests as well as beach towels!
MISC There are a total of four cabins on the one-acre lot. The owners and groundskeepers are on property including dogs, cats, and chickens. We homestead and have many foods growing such as lilikoi, bananas, papayas, pineapple, fig, strawberries, poha berries, sugar cane, lemons, blood oranges, rosemary, basil and more! We are a 501c3 nonprofit dog rescue so there are various dogs/puppies here at any given time. We love when our guests take dogs on field trips!
Rainforest massages are available starting at $100 for the hour.
We are about about a 30 minute drive from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and a lovely central location to many other places on the island. Keep in mind, we are a BIG island so more driving is required here than the other islands.
We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. All of our cabins are equipped with propane heaters for comfort. Winters are also rainy season so if traveling to the Big Island in the winter, we suggest some light layers for warmth, a raincoat and rain boots.
Again, please be aware, we do have dogs on property. They are in a fenced area. We are a 501c3 nonprofit dog rescue, so our stay is usually best for people that love animals, as we also have cats that roam the property.

Dawn has a lovely property within reasonable driving distance to Hilo, Volcano National Park, and beaches. If you read the description of the property and the reviews, you will not be surprised. Everything you need is there and you get a chance to interact with nature and fellow travelers. For a reasonably priced place to stay in the area, this property checks all the boxes.
This property is an unusual little gem tucked away in the rainforest. The host has created nicely appointed, comfortable guest cabins. The cabins, the shared kitchen/dining building and the grounds are well maintained and artistically decorated. The host clearly cares deeply about what she is creating for her guests. The price was quite reasonable. If you are visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the east side of the island, then I highly recommend this property. It is a bit “out of the way”, but that should be expected if you want to experience something unique like this.
Aloha! This was one of the coolest place me and my boyfriend have ever stayed at. We loved it so much all the nature all the beautiful things to see just being off the grid felt so peaceful and relaxing. Definitely will stay here again. Thank you so much to Dawn! She was amazing attentive, very kind and she literally has such a cool spot. Love what she is doing there Mahalo will definitely be visiting again soon.
If you’re looking for a jungle getaway, then this place is it. Seclusion, privacy, outdoor shower, rainforest sounds all added to the allure of the bungalow. The queen bed was comfy and there was a heater for when it got chilly at night. Would definitely stay here again.
Great, somewhat remote, totally off grid location!
Perfect for a romantic getaway or a single person looking to explore the island. Outdoor bathroom/shower like nothing I've experienced! Dawn is insightful and willing to share her island knowledge...
You can keep your stuffy hotel experience, I'll be back!
Manager was very nice and showed us all the fundamentals of where we were 🏝️I was here to play LavaLinks Disc Golf Course. Wonderful interaction with off grid living. Communal kitchen was great. Fresh eggs are usually available for the guests. Jungle atmosphere was nice. Really enjoyed our stay.
Truly different experience especially for people who come from a city. We came home early every day so we can shower in the “jungle” watching the rain and hearing frogs. The apartment has everything you need for a short or long stay. The yard is beautiful with flowers and decorations. It definitely will make you feel like living in a rainforest.
Dawn is very friendly. We had great conversation every night in the kitchen. (We seem to always have the same dinner time). Her cats and dogs are super cute. She even gave us fresh eggs from her chickens every morning!
Dawn did a great job of communicating on her listing and all throughout our stay. So even if something wasn’t “perfect” we knew and that filled any gaps.
Be ready for rainy season if you come at that time! We should have for sure brought some panchos and extra flashlights (Dawn still has a lot of the gap fillers like umbrella, bug spray etc).
This was a great option for us as we did not want to fly with camping gear. This really was a sweet little space and we’d probably return when we visit the big island again as it’s close (and just far enough away) from Hilo and a quick drive to the volcanos.
