The Lookout, a custom-built log cabin on 18 acres of mountainside property, is not just a vacation rental but a piece of living history. The hand-hewn logs that make up the cabin are a testament to the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of early America's pioneering souls. Initially built in the 1830s by the Callaway family, immortalized in the annals of American history when frontiersman Daniel Boone rescued their kidnapped daughters, the cabin was moved and reassembled in its current location. The main floor living room, with its log walls and ceiling beams, is a cozy place to warm up with the stone gas fireplace. The updated kitchen has all you need to cook a favorite meal and plenty of counter space, including a beautiful wooden countertop island. Outside, the covered porch is the perfect place to relax in the rocking chairs with your morning coffee and enjoy long-range mountain views of Grandfather, Sugar, and Beech Mountains. The back deck has a gas grill, fire pit, and outdoor dining table where guests can enjoy the cool mountain air. The lower level den has a large sectional with room for the whole family to relax while playing games or watching TV.
This historic three-bedroom, two-bath cabin can accommodate up to six guests. Grandfather Mountain is visible from each bedroom. The top floor has two bedrooms with queen beds that share a full bathroom. The lower level has an additional queen bedroom and a full bathroom.
The Lookout is not just a historical cabin but a modern retreat. It has all the amenities you need for a comfortable and convenient stay. These include Wifi, a Nintendo Switch, and a washer and dryer. The lower-level bedrooms and common areas have electric baseboard heat, and the upper bedrooms have mini-split heating and air conditioning units. Two dogs are welcome, with an additional pet fee. Please note that there are exterior security cameras at the cabin. Winter travelers should prepare for inclement weather with AWD or 4WD and snow chains.

We loved the secluded location, the views and the tranquility. Sitting out in the rocking chairs on the porch in the evenings was great. The house is well layed out and had everything we required werequired and more.
Our family enjoyed our stay. The location was so great with only being a few minutes from the center of Boone and the views were gorgeous. The house was very clean and had everything we needed for our 3 night stay. Our kids loved their first time to the mountains staying in this cabin and have already asked when we are coming back. We highly recommend!
We rented this cabin for the weekend of the App State Homecoming. The cabin is exactly as described, well appointed and had a fantastic view of Grandfather Mountain. Arriving after dark amid snow and wind, we entered a cozy cabin with gas logs, beautiful furnishings and plenty of room to spread out. Thanks so much for sharing your home with us!
Very comfortable, clean and well designed cabin. Well furnished. Excellent view. Easy access with door code. Only slight negative may be lower floor somewhat musty. May be couch.
It was a good property with nice views. There is charm in the old building and purpose in the decor. We spent most the time in the kitchen or out on the deck. The fees were very high comparably so caution if you are just staying for 2 nights like we did. Overall we would recommend.
We stayed for few days before we had to drop off our Daughter at App State. We have visited Boone several times. This cabin has one of the best views I have seen. Very peaceful location on a private drive. When you are sitting on the porch looking at the mountains you feel like you are so far away, but it is a very short drive to downtown Boone. We really enjoyed our stay.
This cabin was spacious and well equipped with all kitchen items needed plus living room items (including board games and Nintendo switch). The cozy living spaces were warm due to fireplace and gas stove plus blankets. I was nicely surprised that so many kitchen extras were available. I try to leave spaces cleaner than when I arrive but this place was already so clean and well equipped with entryway rug mats to wipe snowy feet.
Be careful. The road is washed out and dangerous to drive on, especially at night. Thankfully we arrived while it was still daylight. Engineers will need to rebuild road. It is gravel dirt. Your car will almost scrape the side road and shrubs to pass the hole and drop off area. Extreme switchbacks- the last one we just backed up into the property. Management needs to disclose the road situation so be aware. Would have been a good to know. I drive a very low sports car and could have tried to make other arrangements. I lived in Boone five years and the house is great proximity to Boone. House has beautiful views. We did not spend much time at the house so I can’t really review the inside. It was fine and comfortable for what we needed. Management needs to spray for bugs as there were a lot of flying lady bugs and stink bugs in both bedrooms upstairs. The bottom floor also had an interesting smell but again we weren’t there but to sleep. I would recommend the home overall.
Cabin was clean and cozy. The view from the deck was amazing! Perfect place to stay while visiting our sons at App State, the cabin was only 10 minutes from campus.
We had a lovely time. Beautiful view and of course perfect mountain temps!

I appreciate the warning about the tight parking, 3 vehicles was tight but fine. If you go down hill a little is a place to make an easy “U” turn for leaving.
The drive up the mountain even with no snow should not be underestimated. The road up has a washed out area that has left a huge erosion hole that takes up half the road. I was actually surprised that renters were allowed to drive up there at all. I would caution anyone who may be attempting to drive up in the dark, especially while the road is in the current condition that it is. Apparently this is the better of the two options as we were told not to avoid one of the entry roads because it was under repair but the other road we were instructed to take by the management company did not seem much better.
