We took the very quick ferry ride across the harbor to Flaxmill Bay ($7 return trip) and did a couple of hikes over there, which were enjoyable. There is not much of a town at Flaxmill or Cooks Beach Township. Whitianga seemed like a nice town,

There are good enough shops which I needed even it is a small town. Beautiful beach and nice local person.
