Trent and Mersey Canal near Wychnor, Staffordshire. The pound between Wychnor Lock and Alrewas Lock includes a short stretch about three hundred metres south-west of here where the canal merges with the River Trent, Consequently, here the actual water level fluctuates considerably after persistent heavy rain. The towpath (and public footpath) on the north side is built on stilts. At several points this effectively provides bridges across intermittent streams and other places where flood water flows off the plain, back to the river. These have now been given numbers, as if they were crossing the canal. The one in this picture is number 45C.

The River Trent near Alrewas, Staffordshire. This is the scene approaching Alrewas from the north-east. The river flows towards the camera, through the low walkway/bridge which is the towpath for the Trent and Mersey Canal. The canal veers off to the left towards Alrewas Lock, having utilised the river's course for about three hundred metres. This pound of the canal is not navigable safely when the river is in flood.

Canal, Boom, Weir and River. The weir was constructed to maintain a constant water level for the Trent and Mersey Canal, which uses the course of the River Trent for a short distance north of Alrewas. The boom on the left prevents canal boats from being swept onto the weir. To the left of the boom, the river level is maintained by the canal as far as Wychnor Lock. This picture was taken with the sun low, in late evening, hence the golden glow to the trees. A lone heron stands, maybe hoping for a final catch in the fading rays of sunlight.
