Learn more about Gingin

The Gravity Discovery Centre offers hands-on astronomy exhibits and a chance to climb the 45-meter leaning tower. Visit the historic water wheel and explore the native wildflower trails in Granville Park when they're blooming in spring.

It’s nearly Springtime or is it Djilba?

The Canola fields are in full flower and yes we have had a couple of nice sunny days but it’s still cold in the mornings with some rain, not quite Winter and yet not quite Spring.

Recently, I have learnt that in Noongar culture their calendar has six distinctly different seasons Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba and Kambarang.

These seasons are not tied just to the weather but also related to other events such as the flowering of plants and or the behaviour of the animals in a local region. The Noongar seasons can be long or short depending on the what is happening and the ever-changing conditions around us. Only having four seasons and these being determined by a specific date is something I have always found somewhat simplistic and possibly naive.

I guess no matter what seasonal calendar we choose to adopt I am sure I wouldn’t be able to buy a jumper in winter, thanks to our friends in the fashion industry and their secret calendar system. #culture
