The Portage Resort
5/5 Excellent
"I had such a lovely stay here. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The place was ideally placed in Marlborough sound. Easyish to get to with a pick-up service from the hotel to the quay. Great kayaking and hiking from the hotel doorstep. "

Furneaux Lodge
5/5 Excellent
"We stayed at Furneaux Lodge while walking the Queen Charlotte Track in February, 2024. After hiking the ~10 miles on the first day through a symphony of cicadas and outstanding views, feeling hot and tired, we walked into the magical oasis that is Furneaux Lodge.
The setting is absolutely dreamy with a large grassy yard leading down to a pretty beach. It feels tranquil and elegant. We'd splurged on a suite and were astounded by how beautiful it was. The suites are two to a building and set off on one side of the property. Ours was huge with a large living area, a separate bedroom and a big bathroom with a large shower with fluffy towels. The decor was beautiful and there was even AC (!) which meant that we were able to sleep well that night.
One small but appreciated touch was the little package of cookies in the room to go with morning tea/coffee and also instant decaf coffee (it was the only place with decaf in the room in our month of travel in NZ).
After a day of hiking, it felt great to spend some time in the hot tub and then have a drink on the main building's pretty verandah. The bartender was very sweet and let us taste several beers and ciders before deciding on one.
The one downside to Furneaux, though, is that there are no other dining options nearby and their restaurant is NOT vegetarian-friendly. There was only one vegetarian entree and no vegan ones. It's also expensive but that's to be expected given the remote location and lack of other options."
