La forteresse était située sur la frontière entre le Royaume de France et le Duché d'Aquitaine. Le château est l'un des maillons de défense, théâtres d'affrontement pendant la première partie de la guerre de Cent Ans. Les différents propriétaires ont été des familles de Cluis, de Chauvigny et de Bourbon-Montpensier. La forteresse est maintenant propriété de la commune.
