Escape to Eggleston! Enjoy its culture and history.

Footpath to Eggleston Bridge The Teesdale way from Cotherstone to Eggleston drops down the steep and wooded north bank of the Tees just above the outflow from the tunnel built to bring water from Kielder water to the Tees. This track is the service road for that engineering white elephant, now rarely used as demand for water from Teesside industry has all but vanished, and the Kielder water is such a different pH from that of the Tees that it is environmentally unacceptable to move water through the tunnel. There is a small annual release through the tunnel each winter (when river levels are high and the addition is well diluted) just to keep the water in the tunnel fresh.
