Ave Maria Grotto, in Cullman, Alabama, is a landscaped, 4-acre park in an old quarry on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey, providing a garden setting for 125 miniature reproductions of some of the most famous religious structures of the world. It was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on February 24, 1976, and to the National Register of Historic Places on January 19, 1984. The stone and concrete models are the work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard's Abbey, who devoted some 50 years to the project, the last three decades (1932 to 1961) almost without interruption. They incorporate discarded building supplies, bricks, marbles, tiles, pipes, sea shells, marbles, plastic animals, costume jewellery, toilet bowl floats and cold cream jars. Born in 1878 in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Brother Joseph was maimed in an accident that left him slightly hunched due to cervical kyphosis. He immigrated to the United States as a teenager, settling in northern Alabama. Soon afterward he began studying at the newly founded Benedictine monastery of St. Bernard, where he took his vows in 1897. Br. Joseph was not allowed to be ordained as a priest, due to the rule of the period that stated any man with a distracting disability could not be ordained a priest. He ran the monastery’s power plant and was, even by a monk's standards, a withdrawn, quiet man. Brother Joseph rarely left Alabama, where he died in 1961.

Birthday getaway

Adorable home with an amazing view proved to be the perfect way to spend a weekend getaway. We needed a central spot for hiking and fly fishing and this location was perfect!

Awesome Lake Retreat

Great place to get away and enjoy the lake. Great view of the water. Lots of things to entertain…arcade games, ping pong, kayaks, covered boathouse, fire pit. Very reasonable pricing. Renter was very responsive. Would definitely book again.

Memorial Day week vacation

This was a great house on smith lake. Beautiful view and great dock to fish and swim off of. We kayaked, swam and caught a few bass from the dock. Great week!

Waterfront getaway !

I had an Absolutely peaceful stay for me as I worked in the area . I could tell it was also the perfect place to return with my family for some summer fun ! We will be back 10/10 recommend!!!

Nice getaway

It was a lovely retreat on the lake for our family. Located between Huntsville and Birmingham gave us nice day-trip opportunities. There isn’t a dishwasher but paper plates were provided for the nights we didn’t want to do dishes.

Perfect location with great view

We have rented 4 different houses on this lake and each house had benefits but this one was our favorite. The location was great. Slope to lake incredible. My 82 year old dad loved all the details in the house. My kids and I loved the deck.

Memorial Day Weekend

We had a wonderful time here, the cabin was really cute and plenty of space for our family and dogs. The porch was wonderful to sit out on and have morning coffee, looking at the lake. The dock was great to swim from, and we brought our 20' boat as well - the boat ramp is a bit of a drive though, so just plan for that. Overall we had a wonderful weekend.

Beautiful property

It was beautiful and they had everything you needed. My family and I rented here for a wedding that was a few miles away. We went kayaking everyday and ate breakfast, lunch and dinner on the deck enjoying the view. We loved it and can’t wait to go back. Was able to get a hold of the owners if we needed anything.

We’re lake people now!!

This was our first time to vacation on a lake and Smith Lake did not disappoint! Crystal clear water, and relaxing, serene setting. The house was perfect! It had the integrity of an old fashion lake house with modern amenities. The owner was so accommodating! We will be back!!

Wonderful Long Weekend at a Great Place

House was quaint and cozy. Very relaxing. The deck is magnificent! A little more furniture on the deck could make it even better. We will definitely be going back. The dogs had a ball. Boat dock is great. It was easy to get from boat ramp to house.

Relaxing at it’s best

My family and my brother’s family enjoyed this house so much. There were a total of 7 people and we never felt cramped. The lake is one of the cleanest and clearest I have ever seen. Swimming off the dock or rocks on the shore was amazing. We would definitely come back.

Relaxing stay at the lake

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Coffee on the porch to start our days, and then relaxing by the firepit to cap it off. My kids loved playing on the dock and rocks along the shore. They could have spent a whole week down there. My one criticism is the lighting in the living room / kitchen is lacking. It seemed dark in there, even in the middle of the day with all the windows. Other than that, it was great!

Amazing!!!!

Went for a long weekend with the husband and our dog and Loved It!!! We spent most of the time on the amazing deck and the dock! Yes the views are that picture perfect! We didn't have a boat and wanted a place we could still easily swim/enjoy the water and this place delivered. The house was decorated so cutely and we felt right at home with all the small touches including a large crate for our dog so we didn't even have to bring ours! I would recommend doing what we did and bring all you need so you don't have to go shopping during your stay, cause once you are there you won't want to leave, trust me on this. Already looking to book again!!
