"This is a gem -- famly run hotel (couple and their seven children!), in a historical hotel (100+ year old which was a restaurant and many other things over its history). Judy Garland used to stay there in the 1930s. Lots of history. But more importantly, it's relaxed and feels like you're staying in a family house with a family who stays out of your way unless you need help, in which case they are very helpful. I've seen comments about the bathroom situation. What I can say is I stayed there two different times, and the shared bathroom was not a problem at all. Maybe it's because overall the hotel was not very occupied. I can see if it was fully booked it might be a bit of an issue but also understand that some rooms have their own or a shared bathroom, which means that the communal bathroom doesn't have everyone using it. Also I believe every room has its own sink and mirror, so you can wash face/brush teeth in your own room. I felt the hotel was very clean while also feeling old and historic. If there's a downside it's that the town of Springer is pretty dead, and you'll have a hard time getting a meal at night nearby. Overall I'd totally stay here again and would recommend that you try it if you're in the area. "

"Grinning Bear Lodge was exactly as advertised. Quiet, peaceful, and yet close to activities and services. The lodge was very clean and well kept. Everything you need to stay and not leave if that’s what you want to do. Sit on the deck and view the wildlife and the stars. Even saw a bear on the property."

"We had a grand week for our family reunion! Lots of room to roam! The forested area and creek behind the cabin was definitely a favorite for the kids and teens! The large great room in the lodge was a fun gathering space! The wildflowers, views, occasional rain, trees, etc., was all enjoyable and stunning. It is a great place to relax and unwind for awhile! Lisa, the property manager, is VERY responsive and helpful!Things to be aware of: 1. The cabin and the lodge are .25 miles apart....so a nice walk! (Or you can drive between them if you need to.)2. ALL areas are up or down stairs, so MAKE SURE EVERYONE IS MOBILE! For example, the kitchen in the lodge is down on the ground level, but the eating space and great room is up on the second floor. In other words, you will have no trouble getting in both your "stairs" and your "steps" every day! 3. This property is at 8500 feet elevation, which may take getting used to for some, but also the reason that it is pleasant and cool during the summer! Yea!"
