Nice getaway
Place is nice, a bit run down, older but nice...what you expect at an older lodge. If you want to go to any restaurants or places open past 8, go to the cute town of Portsmouth. The bar at this hotel literally closes at 8 pm! The outdoor pool is fantastic, best part of the trip. Wi-fi is non existent in the hotel rooms.
The property is pretty outdated, which we kind of expected and didn’t really mind considering it’s a state park lodge, but there were several problems. The rooms were dirty, our first room had candy and crumbs on the floor and hair on the pillows and toilet. When we notified the front desk they just said “sorry about that” and moved us to another room. No upgrade, no discount, not really any concern. Just seemed like business as usual. Our second room was cleaner, but not perfect. We actually found a sock under the corner of the bed when we were packing up. The amenities were probably the most frustrating of all. The website boast several amenities that were no were to be found (and most of the reason we booked). The putting green had been torn out and all that remained was a concrete pad. The disc golf course was their, but no discs. Most of the games in the game room were $1 each to play, and several were out of order. The sauna was closed for whatever reason. The website also stated they had a free deluxe breakfast during the off season. When we arrived we were told that was only on the weekends. We stayed Monday-Thursday so our breakfast included cereal, danishes, old fruit, and refrigerated pancakes and waffles. The pool and hot tub were both nice. The tennis courts and shuffle board were both available, but in pretty bad shape. We didn’t even try to find the putt putt course or the archery area, so not sure how those are or if they are open.

It was expensive for the rooms. Pretty area where it is located.
We arrived from the north which is very sparsely populated for quite a long portion of our ride. We were getting nervous about what we would be greeted with given the limited attractions in the surrounding area. Turned off the main road to more nothing, up the hill around the corner and then... WOW this gorgeous facility popping out of the top of this hill. We really love the rustic look so this was our cup of tea. The day itself was dreary and chilly, but our two kids wanted to swim. Sadly, with COVID restrictions, swimming was limited to an hour, however after that hour they were satisfied. They also enjoyed the arcade and perused the gift shop. We had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant (O-Hee-Yuh Restaurant). We enjoyed everything and had no complaints. As we were just passing through, we only stayed the one night, but if/when we were to visit the area again, we would be confident in returning to Shawnee. We had the room with 2 double beds and the bunk beds. FUN!
OH! My favorite part is the hand soap, not quite sure what the scent is, but I just loved it. Maybe lemon and something.
For those who want to know, wifi was sporadic (we have unlimited data on our phones, but still had trouble using anything). The rooms could use a little upgrade, but everything was clean. The bathrooms were dated, but everything was in working order. Beds were comfy, nice patio with chairs overlooking the parking lot, but still a nice view. We recommend a visit to Shawnee.
When I made the reservation months before hand, it was for my husband and I and our 4 children. When we got there at 3:30 pm, they did let us check in early, however, the room they gave us was 2 double beds. I had to call and explain to the staff why we needed the room with the bunkbeds, that I initially reserved.
The pool area is reserved in 1 hour slots and maximum 10 people in the pool. When we checked in at 3:30 pm, the person who was supposed to be at the pool was not there but his computer was open with information pulled up and the reservation book was open as well. After waiting about 20 minutes for him to return, he booked my family for the earliest of 9pm for the pool. However, the same family and room number with a party of 3 was reserved for 2 hours back to back for 7 and 8pm. When this was brought up to the hotel manager, nothing was done about it. At our 9pm reservation with our family of 6 to start, they were 8 more people in the pool as well making that a total of 14. Instead of booking us earlier with a party of 3, *who got 2 hours pool time*, we were booked late with a total of 14 people. The arcade room games barely work. The machines will take your money.
The room we had to request also had several sheet stains, the top bunk guard rail wasn't fastened for safety, and the bathroom door was busted on the bottom. The patio door also wouldn't open.
The area is beautiful, however not worth the price of everything mentioned.
We thought the property was very beautiful the only problem we had is it was unlimited staff we ordered from the kitchen for dinner and it was very good another problem is they don’t have coffee until nine in the morning. Then when we went to get coffee no one was there to actually put it out or serve it anyone
Restaurant was closed. No breakfast, no coffee. Middle of nowhere no food within 30 miles. Would avoid this hotel unless you are staying in the state park.
Our bed was not comfortable and didn't sound/seem very sturdy. It was a nice stay overall. Will be a beautiful place in the spring/summer when everything is blooming!

This lodge is aged, but pretty well maintained. We had Wifi problems for most of our stay, annoying. Great location for hiking and being outdoors.
The cabins offer a at home feel with modern comfort and technology with flat screens in each room and gas fireplace. Very peaceful and quite and beautiful views of Shawnee forest. A very nice place to stay and much more private than your standard motel. Worth every penny.
Not the cleanest, exhaust fan in bathroom broke...expensive food amd hidden charges. Booked online at $80 a night amd charged me $129 and some other seperate fees no one can explain
Very nice out in the woods a bit but that’s the point.

The lodge was a little outdated but still was enjoyable! The staff was extremely nice and helpful. (Especially due to COVID maps weren’t just sitting out). Overall, things were clean and I felt safe. The trails were fun to hike and the restaurant was convenient. The food was ok and Portsmouth had restaurants only 7 minutes away. We didn’t Go swimming. COVID policy required reservations for the pool, there was We had a great time!

Vrbo listing is misleading
The cabins are outdated and they no longer have hot tubs in the cabins. The vrbo listing shows a hot tub in the cabin in the pictures and it shows up under the search criteria for hot tubs. The air conditioning was broke and it was 85 degrees inside the cabin, luckily the manager for the lodge was nice enough to send someone to install a window unit and get us some fans.
