About this property
House in mountain location with amazing views.
This beautiful private house is set in a half acre plot on the edge of a quiet village, situated on the slopes of the Cabrales valley and next to the Picos de Europa national park. It is a place to enjoy peace and tranquility and to get away from the noise of modern life.
Accommodation is on two storeys with a generous open plan living space on the upper floor with cosy sofas and a wood burning stove. There is a large covered deck leading off the living space with fabulous views looking across a green wooded valley and the houses and church of a village below. The majestic peaks of the Picos de Europa mountains rise up in the background.
This area of Spain is easily reached by ferry or plane from the UK and other parts of Europe. Ryanair fly from London and Edinburgh to Santander, Easyjet fly from London to Asturias airport and from Edinburgh, Bristol, London and Manchester to Bilbao. Vueling also fly from Heathrow to Bilbao. If you want to go slow, then there are regular ferries with Brittany Ferries departing Plymouth or Portsmouth to Santander or Bilbao.
This house was built in 2008 following the traditional Asturian style. The wooden balcony on the south facade gives a fantastic first impression when you arrive. It has lots of character and charm with all the conveniences of a contemporary house. It was built by father and daughter team Julian and Anna Usborne who bought the plot of land in 2005 after visiting the area. We really love this house and visit it as often as possible. What makes the house so amazing is the mountain location and the village where it is situated. The local people are very friendly and will go out of their way to help although most people don't speak English so it is a great opportunity to practice speaking Spanish! There are about 60 residents in the village and people buy their groceries from visiting vans that supply fresh fish, fruit and vegetables and other groceries. There are also a range of shops and restaurants 10 minutes away by car in the villages of Carreña or Arenas de Cabrales.
There are lots of things to do and places to see within easy driving distance of the house. You can drive up into the mountains and explore the high snowy peaks. We walked to the base of the 'Naranjo de Bulnes' which is one of the highest peaks in the Picos range at around 2500 metres. If you don't fancy exerting yourself too much, there is a funicular railway that takes you up to the small village of Bulnes, high in the mountains and inaccessible by car. There are many routes for all levels of walking from gentle strolls to all day hikes. Other popular activities in the area include swimming at the local river or the nearby beaches. There is a fantastic beach at about 30 minutes drive at Niembro and the neighbouring naturist beach of Torimbia is also worth visiting. Continuing with water activities, canoeing is a popular activity along the river Sella and canoes can be hired with the possibility of being picked up downstream after a hard day's paddling.
There are many interesting places to visit within an hours drive or so. The town of Cangas de Onis is about 35 minutes away and has a fantastic market on Sunday mornings. This is well worth a visit especially if you are a foodie. There are hundreds of different types of local cheese for sale as well as smoked and unsmoked chorizo, dry cured ham and fruit and vegetables. Further afield at about 1hr 30 minutes is the city of Oviedo, where you can see beautiful architecture, hang out in the street cafés and enjoy the amazing covered food market. Again a foodie paradise, with many different types of fish you never see in the UK. The city of Santander is also quite easy to reach, at about 1hr 30 minutes drive. It is a beautiful port city with beaches and lots of shopping options. A bit further away is Bilbao, at about 3hrs drive but still possible for a day trip or overnight stay. There is the amazing Guggenheim museum and lots of shopping and restaurant possibilities.

We have stayed at Casa Usborne several times and it is the best holiday rental we have found anywhere, and we have stayed in quite a few. Well equipped (including the kitchen where a lot of similar properties are lacking), comfortable, great location with lovely views especially from the balcony. The owner and the local house manager are very helpful.
A modern well constructed home built to fit the aesthetic of the small village. 3 bedrooms and bathrooms on the first floor, and kitchen, dining and living quarters on the 2nd were well designed for our small group of one couple and two singles. The kitchen was well appointed for home cooking. The information found in the house about things to do in the area, particularly local walks and hikes, was very useful. Would strongly recommend this house if you are visiting the Picos for an extended period.
We were in Casa Usborne for a second time.
And again it was beautiful.
The views you can enjoy from the house are amazing.
At night the sky is spectacular. It is so dark that you can enjoy a view of the sky that makes you want to come back soon. This has been our second stay. And we are already longing for a third one. The house has been arranged by Anna very thoughtfully. Thank you Anna.

We absolutely loved the house and the location. Beautiful views, the gentle sounds of the cowbells, the owls at night and watching the birds. The house is very well laid out and comfortable. Austurias and the Picos de Europa are beautiful and we hiked nearly every day. We were at the house for 10 days and easily would have enjoyed another 10 days. We can understand why some guests have returned multiple times.
This property is exceptionally good and extremely tastefully appointed. Constructed by the owner and her father, a lot of love and care has gone into the design of the building which is extremely compatible with the surrounding area. Wonderful fireplace and French windows seemingly everywhere. Stunning mountain views. Secluded and extremely comfortable. It is our solid intention to return at a later date. Thanks
Lovely place to stay. A newly built house sympathetic to the traditional local style. Excellent facilities with each bedroom (very comfy beds) having ensuite bathrooms. Great kitchen and open living space with a large woodburner. TV a little small for us and the dvd could be better but I am fussy. Lots of good movies to watch and family games to play. Views and landscape really beautiful and loads of hikes which we loved. The access isn't particularly easy for a large car which we have but plenty of spaces to park. It's an expensive place to stay but you get what you pay for. The host Anna is extremely responsive and I highly recommend staying there. I arrived exhausted and left totally chilled out. Beautiful part of Spain and so much to do and explore.
A beautiful house, wonderfully equipped and very comfortable. We had an incredibly restful stay here, with only the sound of birds around us. Stunning views. Just what we needed to relax; we couldn’t have asked for anything more.
This home served us very well for the week that we were visiting the Asturias region. It is solidly built, thoughtfully designed and filled with light from its many windows, which we appreciated very much. We loved the birdsong and the cowbells in the distance, and watching the clouds and mist move across the mountains. Internet and cellular service were almost always available and more robust than we would have expected for such a remote area. And despite its rural location, restaurants and shops were available within a 10-15 minute drive. The small mountain road was narrow and winding but not scary (smooth surface, no exposure), but as with many roads in the area, you do have to slow way down on the the sharper turns as many people drive too fast, even into the blind turns where sometimes only one can pass at a time. We had hoped to bike some of these roads but quickly though better of it for this reason. We would visit this area and this home again.
We spent two weeks in Casa Usborne in Berodia, Asturias.
The house of Anna Usborne exceeded our expectations in every way you could imagine.
The views from the house's terrace are spectacular. Even from your bed you can admire the stars at night because the windows are rather big. The house is spacious and with three bathrooms more than enough for 4 people.
The open kitchen and living room is perfect for reading on a rainy day. Though we had only one. We used the kitchen a lot because one of us is vegetarian. The kitchen has everything you need. From the terrace you could do birdwatching. During the night or early morning you can hear the calls of owls.
If you are interested in Spanish you will enjoy Anna's dictionary and if you are interested in Spanish cooking you will find the cookbook "Food of Spain" by Claudia Roden.
All these details make you feel at home immediately.
We went hiking every day. There are a lot of nice trails not far away. And sometimes early in the morning we took extensive walks in the area surrounding Berodia. People were very friendly to us. And I think this was because they knew Anna and extended their sympathy for her to the people who stayed in her house. We felt very welcome. Not to mention Carolina. She was available immediately when a question popped up. Her friendly way put us at ease at once when in the beginning there had been a change of the Wifi password we were not able to figure out.
We very much would love to return.
Two weeks were wonderful. But I could easily imagine to spend all my vacation there.
Thank you very much Anna and Carolina.
Best wishes from Bertlin
Ellen
