We loved our stay in this rustic but comfortable lodge located in the Costa Rican wilderness. The staff are lively and the food excellent. Outstanding bird watching as well.

There is not much to say over and above What others have said. Stayed with my daughter for 2 nights, and enjoyed bathing in the pools above the waterfall, extensive and safe trails. Be really careful walking around the waterfall as help is a long way off if needed. A 24-hour chorus of wildlife seems to change every few minutes.
The chocolate is absolutely fantastic.
We slept in and had all of our meals in the lodge. The food was delicious and unique. With each meal was a different kind of freshly made juice.
The staff are all very helpful and friendly, and are obviously just as happy to be there.
Thank you
A beautiful place to get away from the crowds at all the national parks. It’s about an hour up a bumpy dirt road so i definitely recommend a vehicle with 4 wheel drive. The staff is very friendly and accommodating! They grow most of the food on site, and each meal is fresh and delightful. There are hiking trails and beautiful ponds and waterfalls. There are two outdoor yoga decks for self guided meditation. A special thanks to the manager, Fabiola, who went above and beyong to make us feel comfortable! This place is a hidden gem.

After the 50-minute drive from the highway, in 2d gear nearly all the way, I was hopeful that Macaw Lodge would provide everything we needed so that we needn't drive at all while there. This proved true. Staff was welcoming, coming out to meet us and carrying our luggage to our room. They were helpful and generous at every turn; Alvin found us out walking and offered a tour, with tastings, of the fruit orchard and vegetable gardens. The grounds are beautiful, with gardens thoughtfully planted. We purchased the full-board plan, and the food was very good and plentiful. Our room in the lodge was very comfortable, though if we were staying for longer than a couple nights, we'd probably want to rent one of the cabins to have a little more space. Our room offered large screened windows overlooking the ponds below, perfect for a couple of birders wanting to see birds coming to the pond. Birding was good right around the lodge, with a large variety of species coming to a couple of fruiting trees right above the parking lot. NOTE: the Googlemap directions linked to the website send you up Rt. 320 if you are coming from the northwest - this road is significantly rough, potholed, and slow going for much of the way. When we left, we asked a couple of fellows in the nearest town which way to go to get to a coastal town southeast of Jaco, and they directed us down a different road that was MUCH smoother and more pleasant, and came out at Jaco. Worth taking!
Accueil excellent, chambre superbe.

Small lodge, amazing grounds for relaxing.
Amazing gardens, beautiful hike to private waterfalls. Has some service issues. Refrigerator was out of order in our deluxe bungalow and kitchen was missing basics like towels, dish rack and utensils. No information was offered about this and it could not be fixed. Personnel is awesome. Food is not a la carte, but it is a pleasurable experience.
This place is very remote. Super long drive over a slow bumpy road with lots of rocks. The staff does not speak good English and we had communication problems which made me feel badly since I am very courteous and try to be polite and humble, but they did not understand our questions. The rooms were nice but the beds and bedding not the best quality. The food was excellent, but you are limited to eating there, no other choices and it's pricey.
The grounds are beautiful, they have the best waterfall! And a natural spa. It's a nice eco lodge, they aspire to be self sustaining and you can feel good about that.
Great place for relax and detox time.
Eco-friendly lodge with awesome gardens, trails and a waterfall.
Bungalows have a great view to the mountains.
Excellent and healthy food.
Road requieres a 4WD, but it is NOT dangerous, just bumpy.
The lodge is beautiful and peaceful. It's exactly what we wanted. Note however that the road to get there is an adventure. Do not drive at night! Also best if not raining or foggy. So if you are renting a car, you need a 4wheel drive SUV. The manager and staff are beyond gracious and accommodating. The food, which is grown entirely on the premises, is just divine. Literally the best food we had in the entire country. Bring your binoculars and camera. The wildlife and birds/bats/insects abound. It's quite spectacular. Can't wait to return.
This was an experiment, Macaw Lodge is not your typical hotel, it is a remote place of beauty and serenity. It started very well, seeing we were tired after getting there (use a 4WD vehicle and give yourself up to one hour to travel the last 12 miles long stretch of the unpaved road - it is well worth it!) the nice lady at the reception immediately suggested that we go to our room and rest instead of checking in. Our room had no glass windows, instead, one of the walls was just a screened opening. Falling asleep to all the noises from the jungle and nearby ponds and waking up to the birds was an amazing experience.
The locally-grown food is well prepared and the breakfast beautifully presented.
If you go to Costa Rica for nature, away from the crowds, I highly recommend Macaw Lodge, if you go for zip-lining, parasailing, nightlife and such, this is not your place.
