A TALE OF TWO CITIES - CARCASSONNE

Carcassonne is a tale of two cities - divided by the River Aude - the ancient walled Cite and fairy-tale castle on the plateau on the right side of the river and the 'newer' Bastide Saint-Louis or lower town on the left..

Theories on how Carcassonne got its name abound, but arguably the most popular is the story of Dame Carcas, which dates to a siege of the City in the early Middle Ages.

According to legend, around 8th Century the Frankish king tried to starve Carcassonne's Saracen population into submission.

After a long siege foodstocks were severely deplenished and defeat was looming - but the ruler's wife Carcas had a bright idea: she gave orders for a pig to be force fed with the very last sacks of grain, and then tossed over the city walls.

When the pig fell and split open, revealing the contents of its stomach, the watching troops were fooled into believing the inhabitants still had plenty of supplies.

As they retreated in dispair, the jubiliant townsfolk called for church bells to be rung in triumph: 'Carcas, sonne!' ('Ring Carcas!').

Today visitors to La Cite can admire a head and torso statue of a plump, smiling woman, representing the town's namesake, mounted on a column near the Porte Narbonnaise.

A more likely theory, however, is that the name comes from the Celtic Carsac, or the Roman Carcaso or Carcasum, (an important Roman trading post on the site some 2000 years ago).

Others say it derives from Occitan, from the words carac (meaning rock, after the spur on which it sits), and sonne (meaning wood, for the surrounding forest).

The house is in a brilliant position. Located down an old street it's an easy walk to all places of interest - we particularly loved our evening strolls around the local area. The house is clean, tidy and comfortable, cool on a hot day but warm on the one rainy day we had but best of all is the loggia with it's rooftop views. We would definitely stay here again.

Brilliant house in a great location. Great facilities, very comfortable. Especially lovely is the terrace which we used to share a bottle of wine of an afternoon. Would definitely recommend a stay here without hesitation.

This is a really lovely old house which has been sympathetically modernised inside to include everything you could need in a holiday property. Beautifully clean and comfortable we had a marvellous stay and the roof terrace which catches the setting sun was stunning.

Apartment Cezanne was in the perfect position for us for visiting both the old city and the new. It is also in walking distance of the railway station, the canal midi and the river Aude. This was useful as we didn't hire a car for the week we were there. Inga picked us up from the airport as well, although it is not far by taxi. The apartment has a wonderful view of the castle ramparts from both the lounge and one of the bedrooms. It is situated in a quiet street with a selection of restaurants in the next street of which we visited a couple that were very nice. The apartment was spacious and had everything we needed, all in all a very memorable stay.

I booked a long weekend stay at the apartment Monet as a surprise for my wife's 30th, and I can honestly say it was amazing from start to finish! The host, Inga was more than helpful in helping arrange a brilliant stay. We were given a lift from and to the airport which was one less thing to worry about. Inga, is very friendly and welcoming too. On arrival at the apartment I knew I had made the right decision, the location, layout and overall feel of the apartment was perfect for us, and there's a view to match. A travel cot and high chair was provided for our daughter, as well as everything you need for your stay. The location in relation to both the Cité and the new town is great and there are plenty of restaurants close by. There is a small shop around the corner where you can get the basics and fresh bread croissants etc. We absolutely loved our stay at 'Monet', and can definitely recommend it to anyone...... we can safely say we will be returning!

The property is lovely, clean, well maintained and well equipped. There was 4 of us and the house was big enough for us to all do our own thing when we wanted to.The roof terrace is wonderful to sit out on especially at night,so relaxing and peaceful. The house is only 40 minutes from the Mediterranean sea, the medieval city is lovely I would highly recommend walking around it at night less tourists and you get a feel of how it may have been. My son can't eat gluton but we still found places he could eat at. I would recommend this property to young and old our age range was between 17 and 40.

Thanks for letting us stay in your beautiful 2 bedroom townhome. The distance to the castle was amazing and the apartment was so well appointed with everything we could want or need. I hope to come back soon! The best part of the our stay was a wine tour through Limoux with Wendy at Vin en Vacances and having the lovely townhome to come home and make dinner!

This has to be one of, if not the best place we have ever stayed!. We usually rent an appartment for a week in various locations over a Month and in most cases, they are ok. Well carcassonne was PERFECT. From the time walked in, we felt at home, everything you need is there to the smallest detail.Beautifull towells, Heater on, and the more you look the more you will find all you need.. Close to all, the old city and restaurants to all modern facilities and shops. Our hosts Jason and Annette were very friendly and very knowledgable about Carcassonne and the region. They even picked us up to go to an excellent restaurant by (The canal du midi) on our last night. What a treat. Will be telling all our friends about this one, thanks again Philippe + Silvia

We stayed in this lovely townhouse for 5 nights in August with our 5 children (aged 9-15 years). This was our first visit to Carcasonne and we really had a fantastic time. The location is fabulous, just beneath the old cite in a quiet narrow street with only the occasional passing car/moped. Well renovated and quirky (the spiral staircase to the roof terrace was fun to negotiate with hot cups of coffee!), we really enjoyed starting the day with breakfast on the roof terrace looking out over the colourful rooftops and listening to the bells ringing out from nearby churches (they seem to stop at night though or at least we had no problem sleeping). The bedrooms are spacious and the kitchem really well equipped so we tended to eat lunch out and cook dinner in. The washing machine and tumble dryer were also a bonus and were put to good use. We found lots to do as a family. We visited the old cite several times, took a boat trip on the Canal du Midi, hired bikes and cycled to Trebes for lunch and back, swam in the nearby River Aude (there is a swimming pool but we didn't have the required 'speedos' for the boys) and had a hair-raising few hours on the high ropes at the Lac de la Cavayere (I watched!). The owners Jason & Annette were really helpful from start to finish. Nothing was too much trouble, from suggestions for hire car companies, to extra bedding for the sofa bed, to even going and collecting documents from the airport that we had inadvertently dropped on our return home 10 days after our stay in the townhouse and posting them to us in England. Thankyou Jason and Annette for going 'above and beyond the call of duty'. We really hope to return to Carcasonne sometime soon and wouldn't hesitate to stay with you again.

Excellently located literally round the corner from the Cite the townhouse was clean and comfortable and so much nicer for us than staying in a hotel. Would definitely stay here again. Would recommend the Adelaide restaurant in the cite.

We can only say good things about Jason, the apartment and the location. The apartment suited our needs perfectly as we were doing some work on a house nearby and were able to walk back and forth. Jason was really helpful with practical advice and tips based on his own experience which was an invaluable resource to us. He went well beyond the call of duty and we really appreciated that. I would definitely recommend to friends.

We have just returned from staying at the Monet Apartment for 3 nights (18-21 March). The position of this apartment is absolutely perfect. The view from the window of the ramparts are absolutely remarkable. These pictures do not do the apartment justice! It is tastefully decorated and very well cleaned. Information about the surroundings were sent ahead of our visit which was a nice little touch as well as the offer of picking up from the airport for 10 euros door to door is well worth it and also the chance to go to a large supermarket should we need to. I would not hesitate in recommending the Monet apartment (Renoir is just underneath). Location wise could not be beaten!

We have just arrived home after a week in the townhouse. Perfect location, great house with everything you could want or need. I will be recommending this property to friends and family going to Carcassonne. The property was clean, exactly as described and the whole stay was made even better by the great service from the owners. The house is literally at the base of the old city - I think it took us 5 minutes to stroll up! Couldn't have wished for a better base for Cathar country.

We stayed in Sept 08 and really enjoyed ourselves. The apartment was comfortable and it was lovely to lay in bed and see the walls of the old city lit at night. It was just 10 mins from the old city and 10 mins from the new. A perfect location. It was a warm and friendly greeting on arrival too. Thank you!

This review would have been longer but we just have to agree with everything already said. We also found the posted key a big advantage, instead of walking the streets for a few hours. We are recommending Carcassonne and the house to everyone we know...without hesitation.

We have just got back from staying in Monet apartment and had a really enjoyable time. It was easy to find, thanks to all the directions we received before we left home. Parking was easy and free! The position was amazing and we couldn't stop looking at the views of the Cite, especially at night when it was lit up Within 5 minutes you were within the Cite walls and a 10 minute walk in the other direction you were by the Canal du Midi. The apartment was extremely comfortable and had everything we needed. We hope to return and use it as a base to explore the surrounding areas.

My viamichelin.com print-out led us straight to this very well furnished house with basic food items (salt, oil, spices, balsamic, pasta etc) left by previous holidaymakers. There is a Depot de Pain and small but well stocked epicerie within 100 metres open late saturday afternoon and sunday so none of the usual rental/food problems with Saturday pm arrivals. The house was clean and fresh as were the crockery and utensils. We had rain most days but the English Satelite TV helped relieve the ennui. The Cite and the Corbieres Wine Villages were our own focus and did not disapoint. You can walk from the House up to the Cite in an easy 10 minutes. I liked very much to be sent a key by post prior to arrival and not after a long journey having to locate a French Caretaker and be subject to a half hour lecture on the plumbing and heating arrangements. Whilst we are in no way alcoholics perhaps I could suggest visitors invest in a bottle of Gordons or a nice Malt at the airport before you leave U.K. to enhance your evenings on the houses' balcony as they are very expensive bought locally.
