"Ridiculed at by the owner for having a service dog and told Ellie, my service dog, that she was sorry that I didn’t love her. Ellie is my protector and I love her as much as she loves me. The woman then wanted to charge me a Pet Fee, requested papers on my service dog and wouldn’t allow us to stay in the room we booked. ALL ILLEGAL UNDER THE ADA. I am not going to take action, but I hope the owner reads this. CONSEQUENCES OF ADA NON-COMPLIANCE FOR HOTELS. Financial Penalties and Lawsuits: Federal Fines: The Department of Justice can impose fines up to $75,000 for the first violation and $150,000 for subsequent violations. Private Lawsuits: Individuals can sue for violations, often leading to costly legal fees and settlements. ADA HOTEL RULES FOR SERVICE ANIMALS: Allowed Access: Service animals must be permitted to accompany their handlers in all areas of the hotel where the public is allowed, including dining areas, public restrooms, and guest rooms. NO “PET” FEES: Hotels cannot charge a "pet fee" or "cleaning fee" for a service animal, as they are not considered pets. However, if the animal causes damage, the guest can be charged for repairs. PROHIBITED QUESTIONS: Staff cannot ask about the person's disability, require medical documentation, or request a special ID card or training documentation.
