By 1886, the town contained 13 sardine factories, which operated day and night during the season, and produced approximately 5,000 cases per week. About 800 men, women and children worked in the plants. But the industry would decline, and many people moved away. Indeed, the city went bankrupt in 1937. In 1976, the Groundhog Day Gale destroyed many structures along the waterfront. Today, catching fish remains the principal industry, although tourism has become important.

Great waterfront home

"All the comforts of home and then some. Watching the changing tides as well as the eagles were definitely a high light of our stay. Enjoyed the games in the house on the rainy days and the fire stove on the cold nights. Found sea glass at some nearby beaches and explored into Canada. Great communication and very accurate listing. Would love to come back again."

Charming Cottage on quiet street in Historic Eastport

We love this cottage

"Our second visit to Eastport. A very interesting town, great walking. We love this cottage as it is very well equipped convenient to Main Street. Hopefully back next year. Better later in May though as many businesses and the Rosevelt site on Campebello island were not yet open."

"Another amazing stay at one of the best rentals available in Eastport Maine. The owners are truly amazing even offering me an extra night to avoid the pending snowstorm on Christmas Eve. This really meant a lot and just goes hand and hand with the quality of this great rental. Everything about the house was perfect for our third holiday spent there. Couldn't ask for a better experience, location, and level of comfort."
