The former Cistercian Kloster Ebrach, built in Gothic style, was founded in 1127. In 1200, Abbot Hermann I set to work on building the church, which was finished in 1280. More than 50 windows, 26 altars and, above the portal, a rose window adorn the building. The abbey was dissolved in 1803 in the course of Secularization. Since 1851, the abbey buildings served as a prison, nowadays known as Justizvollzugsanstalt Ebrach.

"What a beautiful area - driving thru’ the lovely little towns and villages on minor roads was the best – rolling hills, autumnal colours, a real delight. The bigger towns/cities are well worth a visit – Bamberg, Wurzburg, Rothenberg, Nurnberg, usw. The area is at least as good as the Black Forest - shame that so few of us Brits have “discovered” Franconia.
