"The Intercontinental near Kansas City's Country Club Plaza is a lovely hotel, although not the five-star facility it might have been in years past. I heard from a friend also staying there during my recent visit to KC that the hotel holding company is now in bankruptcy. It shows. The balcony off the hallway on the way to my room needs some clean up; there were some discarded paper cups and related trash. Also I was disappointed my room did not include a microwave. The fridge was nice, but . . . Staff was courteous, especially the valet guys. One even remembered me from a prior stay."

"the outdoor pool was nice and we sat out and enjoyed some sun before dipping in the pool. The big problem was in the middle of the night: I heard water dripping and wondered if something was wrong with the shower. I turned on the light in the bathroom and water was dripping from the vent in the ceiling. In five more minutes, water was dripping from the smoke detector in our room. I went to the front desk, and the attendant quickly moved us to another room. I found out later a pipe was bad on the floor above us. We lost some sleep, but the solution was OK."
