Gatehouse at Manzanar, most famous of the ten concentration camps, or "relocation centers" built to house Japanese-Americans and Japanese aliens during the Second World War. Nearly 120,000 people, two-thirds of them U.S. citizens, were removed from their homes, primarily on the west coast, to the camps inland. When I was a kid, riding up U.S. 395 to a camping or hiking trip in the Sierras, these gatehouses were the most visible parts of what remained of the camp. Manzanar has since become a National Historic Site, with an interpretive center housed in the camp's former auditorium and reconstructed barracks with exhibits documenting the lives of the internees.

It’s a great location to stay if your touring Death Valley and need an overnight location coming from Panamint Springs and staying overnight them dropping in the north end by Big Pine to go see Eureka Dunes.

The French Restaurant - the Still Cafe was a really pleasant surprise and food was excellent. I would recommend even if you are just traveling through the area.
