About this property

Historic Highland Cottage - 4th Lake

  • Welcome to The Highland Cottage, a historic Adirondack lakefront retreat located on beautiful Fourth Lake in the heart of the Adirondacks. Ideally situated between Old Forge and Inlet, this spacious five-bedroom vacation rental combines classic Adirondack charm, waterfront access, and modern comforts, making it the perfect destination for family vacations, snowmobile trips, hiking adventures, and year-round getaways.

Originally built during the early 1900s as the boathouse for the historic Highland Lodge, the cottage was relocated and expanded into a private Adirondack residence sometime after 1922. While fully renovated in 2000, the home still preserves elements of its rich history, including original wainscot paneling in two upstairs lake-facing bedrooms that offer a glimpse into the property's Adirondack heritage and timeless character.

Spread across three levels, The Highland Cottage provides ample space for families and groups to gather, relax, and enjoy the beauty of Fourth Lake. The home features five comfortable bedrooms, three full bathrooms, a welcoming living room, a separate family room, office space, and a large fully equipped kitchen with a peninsula perfect for preparing meals and entertaining.

One of the highlights of the home is the enclosed porch dining area surrounded by large windows overlooking the lake, creating a bright and inviting space for family meals, morning coffee, and relaxing Adirondack evenings. Guests can also enjoy the outdoor gazebo deck while taking in peaceful lake views and the surrounding natural beauty.

Outside, the property offers direct access to Fourth Lake with a private dock and sandy beach area perfect for swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, and relaxing by the water. The spacious outdoor area also includes a picnic table, gas grill, and fire pit, creating the perfect setting for lakeside cookouts and evenings gathered beneath the Adirondack stars.

The cottage is ideally located for outdoor recreation throughout every season. Snowmobile trail access and hiking opportunities are located just a few hundred feet from the property, making it an excellent choice for winter snowmobile vacations and summer hiking adventures alike.

During the warmer months, guests can enjoy boating throughout the Fulton Chain of Lakes, waterfront restaurants, mountain biking, scenic drives, kayaking, paddleboarding, and nearby attractions throughout Old Forge and Inlet. Popular destinations including shops, restaurants, breweries, marinas, and Enchanted Forest Water Safari are all within easy reach.

Fall transforms the Adirondacks into a spectacular display of colorful foliage and crisp mountain air, while winter brings world-class snowmobiling and endless outdoor recreation. Known as the Snowmobiling Capital of the East, the Old Forge and Inlet region offers more than 500 miles of groomed snowmobile trails connecting visitors throughout the Adirondacks. Guests can also enjoy skiing at McCauley Mountain, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing during the winter season.

Whether you're planning a summer lake vacation, a historic Adirondack retreat, or a winter snowmobile getaway, The Highland Cottage offers the perfect waterfront home base for experiencing everything Fourth Lake and the Adirondacks have to offer.
