About this property
Potter's Cottage on Beautiful property in Lovely Margaree Valley
This country cottage is located in the heart of Cape Breton's Margaree Valley, which is well-known for its lush beauty, its proximity to the Cabot Trail and the top-notch salmon fishing in the Margaree River. Located beside the Nile brook, this is the childhood home of renowned potter Bell Fraser, who for years had an established gallery in a barn on this property, and who now lives nearby on the coast in Chimney Corner.
Although it notes the cancellation policy as "no refund," there is a refund of 50% between date of booking and 60 days before arrival- VRBO's policies are not elastic enough to fit this; this guarantee will be spelled out in the simple agreement.
The grounds are lovely and the trees put on a colourful show in fall. This home was built in the 1950’s, but has seen many improvements over the years; there's a renovated bathroom, hardwood floors, a fully equipped kitchen (with tile backsplashes executed by the potter). There are also a deck for BBQ’s, a living room, dining room, and a screened veranda, which is perfect on a summer night.
There’s salmon and trout fishing, and excellent craft galleries nearby. We offer satellite TV, premium Fibre-op Wi-Fi and more, so you can unwind after a day on the Trail, the beach or any other day trips. There is a Master bedroom on the main floor with a Queen bed and direct access to the adjoining bathroom. There are two other bedrooms upstairs; one with a Queen bed and AC, and a second with a double and single bed. There is also a good spin-washer and dryer.
There is no shortage of things to do in the area. The world-famous Cabot Trail is only 2 minutes away and offers some of the best scenery in Canada. Cape Breton Highlands National Park, with trails, lookoffs and waterfalls, is only 50 minutes away. In addition to Chimney Corner beach (30 minutes away), there are other great beaches to check out nearby: Whale Cove (25 minutes away) at which you can explore a fabulous bluff by the sea, with great views north and south, Margaree Harbour (20 minutes away), with its beach and two lighthouses, the Broad Cove area, which offers a spectacular scenic drive, and a great beach.
Southwest of us are the gorgeous rolling hills of Mabou, the town of Inverness, which offer music, pubs and food; the acclaimed new Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs golf courses by the sea (which are only 20 minutes away), and offer a unique golfing experience in Inverness. There are also renowned crafters in the area; interesting quilting, rug hooking, and folk-art can all be found locally.

We had a wonderful time. The location of the Potters Cottage was great, the information from the host was very helpful,we.we’re able to take in many of the Cape Bretons sites during our stay. The cottage was very comfortable.
Great location whether fishing or simply touring. Only a few minutes from the Cabot Trail. If you don’t wish to cook the Dancing Goat is a few minutes away for breakfast and lunch. Evening meals are 20 to 30 minutes away. Spacious downstairs where you can relax and plan your next day.
The cottage was very peaceful and quiet, containing everything we needed. While not closely situated to the main attractions we were interested in, we thoroughly enjoyed our daily drives to the hiking trails and beaches. We would recommend this to others looking for a home base in which to explore the beautiful region of Cape Breton.
The property met all our needs for a one week stay with family (2 adults + one child) from Germany. The house was comfortable and the location was a perfect spot for exploring many local beaches as well as the beautiful Margaree River Valley. Great local music at the nearby Normaway Inn and fabulous food at the Dancing Goat. Kinross Quilts up the valley is a true hidden gem that should not be missed!
Cozy and charming cottage, perfect for our first family vacation in the region! We had plenty of space to hang out, were able to prepare meals with ease and were well situated to explore cities and beaches near by! Most beds were very comfortable. Rustic charm at it’s best!
Very clean, comfortable beds, everything you could possibly want in the kitchen. Well stocked. Washer and dryer bonus! Good location to do the Cabot Trail by day trips.
Quiet and serene.
We enjoyed our stay at the Potter's Cottage. It was the perfect location for our three days travelling around the Cabot Trail. The cottage kitchen is well equipped with all things culinary. The only thing we didn't have with us was shampoo. They provided fresh linens and towels. We enjoyed the use of the oven, washer, and dryer.
Lovely, quiet retreat.
The property is beautiful and the house is well equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The owners are helpful and great to communicate with. My only critique is the lack of outdoor seating. There is nowhere outside to hang out and enjoy the sun.
Lovely cottage.
We cooked our own meals everyday we stayed there. They have everything you need and the grocery store is only about a 15 minute drive if you need anything. It’s a bit of driving to get to the beaches, but there are 4 beautiful beaches within 20-30 min of the cottage. So for the price they charge it is well worth it.
And if you are a fly fisherman, well you can just walk right over to the river.
We would stay here again for sure.
Thanks so much for letting us stay at your cottage.
Older cottage but had the needs and relaxation we were looking for .Loved the porch ,we had all our meals and played games there. The cottage had all the extra kitchen tools we needed , extra bonus washer and dryer.Need larger shower curtain for bathroom hard not to get water on floor. And upstairs are not for anyone with issues very steep and sharp corner on stairs, overall great place we would stay again.
we enjoyed a very relaxing stay in Margaree Valley at Stewart's place. it's well situated for visiting the Park, roughly an hour from the Skyline Trail, and also close to beautiful beaches (Whale Cove was a highlight), local establishments (The Normaway Inn, Old Miller Trout Farm), and other nearby towns of note (Inverness and Mabou). being there during a bit of a warm spell, it was helpful to have an A/C unit in one of the bedrooms. the 1 bathroom is located downstairs, so the bedrooms upstairs didn't have immediate access, but that was easy to accommodate. the kitchen is a bit rustic but had everything we needed--we really appreciated pantry essentials being available. Stewart shared lots of good suggestions for things to do/see/eat, and we were happy to have Bell stop by for a brief hello.
It’s a very nice and very cute cottage. It is settled away from a quiet road, so it’s very quiet. The cottage is rustic but has all the amenities you need. The kitchen was very well stocked with spices, oil and other mains ingredients and cleaning supplies. Lots and lots of dishes and pot and pans. The screened veranda was very nice and we had supper there every night. The beds are comfortable, but the bedrooms upstairs tend to be very warm at night and with only one window AC (which was very noisy)in one of the upstairs bedroom it was not enough to cool the bedrooms and/or to sleep while it was on. Ceiling fan would have been great, although the owner provides many small portable fans.
Overall we had a great stay, and love the ambiance of the cottage. The owner communicated very well and the instructions given were clear and easy to follow.
Lovely cottage, very secluded and quiet area. Ample room to accommodate everyone in the house. Nice layout of the place and great selection of amenities!
We had a wonderful stay at Potter’s Cottage. We felt right at home with the charming and "lived in" decor. Beds were comfortable, there were plenty of towels, lots of space for our clothes in the rooms, and the kitchen was well equipped. We definitely recommend this place for its nostalgic vibes and peaceful location.
A beautiful retreat! My sister and I loved this warm, cozy, artistic home. The kitchen backsplash tiles were amazing! We loved having these attractions very nearby: music at the Barn-Normaway Inn, Margaret Harbor Beach, The Dancing Goat cafe and bakery, the Salmon Museum, and two Macs for locally made gifts!
