Water-powered corn mill, with attached grain dryer and water supply mechanism and launder. Late C18 or earlier, remodelled and enlarged C19, restored as a museum in 1975. Rubble stone, slobbered, with a slate roof laid to diminishing courses. PLAN: L-shaped complex with main mill range aligned parallel to the River Bela, and ancillary range at right angles to the north-west. EXTERIOR: River frontage to south-east with dressed stone plinth and semi circular arch-headed double doorway to lower level. 3 multi-pane upper floor windows with flat-arched heads. Wide south-east gable with timber launder leading from sluice gates with rack and pinion mechanisms. Narrow extension to north-west incorporates corn drying kiln with roof louvre. Single bay north-east elevation with a C20 window frame to each floor and a board door. INTERIOR: The restoration of the mill interior was completed in 1975, and contains a Lowder stone frame on the stone floor and complete associated machinery, driven by a 14ft overshot water wheel. Line shafting in the attic powers the sack hoist which raises grain to the highest part of the building, to be delivered by gravity onto the 4 pairs of millstones below. The roof structure is supported on trusses with curved knee braces to the principles. HISTORY: The mill site is thought to have had medieval origins, rights to erect and run a corn mill having been granted to the Canons of Coningshead in 1220. The present mill operated until 1955. "Unfortunately we were not offered the two bedroom apartment we had booked, instead we were offered a one bed apartment with a sofa bed. The sofa bed was very hard and not suitable for two people, not even children. We requested a partial refund for this and were assured we were entitled to one but this has not been received. "My friend and I recently stayed here and it was fantastic. We were greeted by Noel at the barrier who was extremely welcoming and never failed to smile when we walked past during our stay. All staff were lovely and nothing was too much for them. We were kindly upgraded to a hot tub room on arrival which was a lovely surprise and really made our stay. Room was excellent. Location was excellent. Will definitely visit again."

"Had a fantastic peaceful solo stay at this elegant hotel on the edge of Lake Windermere, staff were friendly and welcoming especially Pippa who made me feel comfortable as an older single female. The location is fantastic, and you can ditch the car and catch the boat over to Bowness, or you can chill out in the lovely pool and spa area, I hope to return."

"It was a wonderful stay, the only thing I can pick at, which is so minuscule is the fact there is such limited times on the spa use. Even then, I’m being picky. Everything else, I can’t fault, one particular thing I have to mention as a positive is the staff are exceptional. They went out of their way, nothing was too much trouble and they were always available to help or let you know anything you had questions about. Overall, we are planning out another trip to the lakes and this is a possible choice "
