Hewn out of the living rock in the 1860s using hand tools and blasting powder, Big Hill Cutting was at one time the deepest railway cutting in the southern hemisphere. Taken as it was near the eastern end of the cutting, even this pic doesn't properly illustrate the depth.

The cutting has a long and macabre history, with several workers killed during its construction due to a blasting accident and several drivers later perishing after crashing their automobiles through the old timber bridge's guardrails and down onto the rails below. Despite the history, it's a peaceful and beautiful place.

The old railway line was abandoned in the 1970s and runs for around 50km between the towns of Thirlmere and Mittagong. Although not a proper rail trail, there are service trails parallelling the railway for much of its length. I've walked it a few times, including the trip pictured which was undertaken 2-Boot-Drive Swagman style ;-)

"Room / Housekeeping - Bedroom was a good size. Pillows need to be replaced with new ones. Towels need to be cleaned thoroughly. Amenities need to be checked prior to guests arriving as we ran out of toilet paper. Breakfast - More options required. Very minimal. "Great location, great rooms great amenities. Breakfast buffet was great and staff were very attentive. Perhaps an exhaust fan in the bathrooms would be welcomed as there is currently none. Also the room service menu was on a QR code and hard to navigate. Perhaps a printed version would be good to include. "

Fabulous Hotel & Garden one for your history book.

"It's our second stay in six months giving a hint that in our books Milton Park is thoughly splendid.Summer & now Autumn, Im hoping to enjoy all four seasons by walking through this historic garden and staying in Anthony Hordens old East Bowral mansion in a Spring & Winter. The visit this time was a formal dinner & dance soiree in the ballroom located at the bottom of the estate being held on the Friday night of a major wet weather event. The skies cleared but the garden path from the hotel to the function centre was a muddy track more suitable for gumboots & anoraks than evening shoes & faux furs. Crisis averted, General Manager David offered us a lift saving us a bedraggled Ball entry. So thank you David & Milton Park staff, we promise next time to bring our wellies.Catered food was delicious, our room was comfortable and warm, the garden in Autumn is gently impressive and the staff hospitable. Loved the 'Old girl'."
