"An older property that will be considered characterful or dated depending on your viewpoint. I enjoyed it including the narrow stairs and corridors, and the historic nature of the room, which was not lacking for the usual amenities. I had an excellent dinner and the Full English Breakfast was all you could wish for. The staff were attentive and friendly. It is a short walk from the 24 hr public car park and is in the centre of town."

"We stayed at the Black Horse as we were going to a friends evening wedding reception in Nuthampstead which is about 3.5 miles away. This was one of the nearest places we could find to stay. Please don’t use Uber when you’re coming back from somewhere to the Black Horse because they are likely to cancel on you, use the local taxi company. The host was very nice. We had a lovely large luxury room called Shonks, comfy bed, lovely bathroom with a great shower. There is use of a shared kitchen in the morning and you can help yourself to things like coffee, toast and cereals. The only thing I would perhaps improve upon is I feel that the window in a kind of little hallway area when you come out the bathroom could have a curtain or net curtain on it. It was a lovely surprise to find that there were people setting up stalls the morning after we stayed and I actually bought some lovely handmade bags but I don’t know how much they wanted to see me coming out the shower in my towel. We would definitely stay again."

"This place never lets me down, the food is always superb and great value, rooms are warm and comfy, only draw back is the noise from the planes low flying from Stansted airport and the church bells opposite going off every hour of the night but still a great place to eat and stay"

"A wonderful period cottage right in the center of town yet on a peaceful street. Saffron Walden is a great location to visit many of the beautiful villages and towns in the area with close proximity to Stansted Airport. An easy train ride from Liverpool Street station on the Stansted Express.Walk to the local supermarket and also a great place called “Cook” that has premade food to throw in the oven after a busy day exploring. The outdoor sitting area was also great!Thank you and I hope to be back!"

"Excellent Breakfast - continental and cooked. Rooms are quaint - Wooden beams and low ceilings in places, and floors have unevenness of old floors. Staircases are steep and narrow. Rooms have plenty of space. Our room had a bath and shower attachment but other rooms have shower so one might need to ask if you have a preference. Very helpful staff. Dinner was good but a little pricey (maybe that was par for the area?). Outside area was beautiful - on the cricket green. Lots of parking space and taxis can give transfer to airport if required."

"This was an amazing find. A gorgeous, comfortable cottage in a peaceful village. Well equipped with everything you need. Lots of quirky features. Dog friendly. Owners were helpful and available if needed. Good food at local pub - also dog friendly. Lots of things to see and do nearby. Beautiful walks from the door."
