"Hotel Catedral is right in the heart of the historic city center. It's a fabulous location for being able to step outside and be literally a few steps from the cathedral, the Templo Mayor, the Zócalo, and the Palacio Nacional. The streets on either side of the hotel are very small and walkable--no major car traffic. I loved being in the thick of things.
The breakfast was an enormous buffet and very good. There were lovely cookies, fruits, and bottled water set out at all times in the lobby. You can also look through a glass floor and see ancient ruins below.
I imagine there are some wonderful rooms with beautiful views available, but I had selected the least expensive room. It was very Soviet era--bare bones, drab and dark, looking out over an interior atrium. This was not a luxury experience. There was no coffee maker, just a couple of bottles of drinking water. On the bright side, the bed and pillows were very comfortable and there was plenty of hot water, and great water pressure in the shower.
If you can get a nice room, I think this would be a great place to stay.
