"If you’ve stayed in a Clayton hotel elsewhere you will have an expectation that the quality of the hotel and service should be at a high level. This hotel is very poorly kept, very unclean and the staff don’t really care too much for the customers coming through the door. I found my room to be very dirty with many cobwebs all over the ceiling and in the corners of the room, the bath to have other peoples hair in the base of the bath, so clearly the standard of cleaning is poor. The rooms are also fairly dated. Also, be careful not to stay here to only to attend events or local meetings nearby as on top of the fairly high price you pay for the poor quality of room, you also get charged £50 a night for parking at the hotel. All in all poor quality for the money paid and well below the expectation of your standard Clayton Hotel quality and service. I would give this hotel a miss. "

"Expensive for what was a very average room."

"This place has a lot going for it. Good location (in one sense), clean, good layout, good staff, bars and cafés nearby. However if someone needed to sleep or have a quiet nap, this is NOT the place. It was extremely noisy until well into the morning. Also room I was in (208) was like a sauna meaning windows needed to be opened. Maybe there are rooms at the rear or side that wouldn’t have these issues. I was up at 8am to catch an early train and barely got any sleep. So despite it being a great place in many ways I wouldn’t stay there again unless I got a quieter room with air con."

"Room was stunning plenty of room to move about. Staff at reception came straight up with 2 more pillows. Ideal location & so quiet. Definitely stay again. Only negative i could say is could do with some chopped up fruit for yoghurt & some bacon"

"I complained about the poor condition of the room provided for my stay and the unacceptable service received from the management staff the following morning. Upon entering the room, we were met with a strong smell of cigarettes. Furthermore, the wardrobe smelled strongly of urine, making it unusable. The room was unbearably hot, and it was evident this was a known issue as a fan had been left running prior to our arrival. The air conditioning unit was not functional, which resulted in almost no sleep. I also booked the hotel as it showed the hotel had a pool, of which we were informed this was closed around covid, I would assume this is a bit of false advertising. Due to a late arrival and a scheduled event, I was unable to report these issues immediately. I reported them to the manager on duty in the morning. The manager’s handling of this complaint was unprofessional. She was rude, interrupted me while I was speaking, and attended to other matters simultaneously. Furthermore, when arranging an alternative room, she was told over the radio that the "upgraded" room also "stunk of smoke," confirming a wider issue with room cleanliness. The manager offered a choice: accept a free upgrade but waive the right to complain, pay for an upgrade and complain or leave and try and claim the whole stay back. This is not an acceptable way to handle customer issues. I complained via the website and the email address provided, NO RESPONSE! "

"The hotel decor is very tired. Its an old building that has been painted in more modern colours but the carpets are very worn and the woodwork has been repainted on top of layers of old paint. It is not a boutique hotel as described. The windows are single glazed with secondary glazing so there is no sound proofing of the street noise outside. We didnt eat at the hotel so cant provide any information about that. The staff however are so friendly and welcoming!"
