Beautiful location with sea views & beach close by.
Kildavannan Schoolhouse is a beautiful comfortable spacious 3 bedroom cottage situated on the Western side of the Isle of Bute.
My place is for couples, solo adventurers, families (with kids), furry friends (pets). An easy 23 mile drive from Glasgow airport to the ferry at Wemyss Bay & ferries take 35 minutes to the island. National Geographic survey top 10 most beautiful adventure destinations in the world!
This cottage has been lovingly renovated to a high standard and recently repainted with great appliances, heating, bathrooms and lovely fabrics and colours making it incredibly warm and comfortable. The views are southerly over the sea and the situation is absolutely stunning and extremely desirable. The cottage is available to rent directly from the owner and it is much more of a 'home' than a 'rental cottage' filled with the comforts you would expect. A short shared driveway leads you up to a small gate through which you will find Kildavannan Schoolhouse and garden. The downstairs consists of a large living area with a window seat, television (freeview not sky! ) and a working fireplace. Fabrics such as colefax and fowler adorn the cushions, blinds and window seat and a handmade leather chair sits beside a very large sofa which will comfortably seat 6 adults. There is a conservatory with more beautiful views that seats four comfortably and can get extremely warm in the daytime. Dark terracotta tiles cover the kitchen floor and new appliances such as separate clothes washer and dryer, dishwasher, large fridge freezer and anything you would sensibly require for a kitchen is available.
There is plenty of cutlery there are plates, glasses, mugs, dishes and cooking utensils also plastic plates and a few cups for kids. Kettle, toaster etc...
There is a large kitchen table covered by an oil tablecloth that easily seats 6 and has additional leaves to seat 12 (it's definitely a push but I have done it before!) There are three bedrooms. Downstairs a double bedroom with en suite shower and loo. This bedroom has views over the garden and the sea beyond. Upstairs is the master bedroom which is beautiful and has a cupboard and dressing table with views over the sea. The third bedroom has been designed with smaller people in mind. 2 single beds with two truckle beds underneath. This means that you can fit 4 kids (or adults!) in but don't expect to see much of the floor. We tend to roll the truckle beds back underneath in the morning. These two bedrooms share a bathroom, loo on the first floor. It has a lovely bath (keep an eye on it as it is a little slow at filling) with a floor that you can warm up before you go in! And anyone can just pop downstairs to use the other bathroom.. details here.
There is a large shower and loo downstairs opposite the front door which we use more often than the bath as it's great for rinsing people off once they have returned from the beach or days adventures.
I wanted to ensure that this quiet secluded cottage was as inviting in the evening as in the daytime. I have bought beautiful new beds with very good quality mattresses and pillows, duvets and bedding so that you will want to sleep in forever!
There are many things to do on the Island. I find that even after 2 weeks I have done something different with the kids every day. From the many walks and adventures, the local cinema, hiring boat for a day trip, swimming, snorkelling exploring, bike riding, trips to other nearby islands. Mount Stuart, gardens, castle and a thriving local music scene. Many things for young and old, romantics and explorers alike. You can be as busy or as relaxed as you like.
HISTORY OF THE ISLAND The Isle of Bute lies in Scotland’s Firth of Clyde, tucked into the spectacular sea lochs of southern Argyll. 15 miles long by approximately 4 miles wide Bute is less than two hours from the city of Glasgow. The island was a popular Victorian seaside destination, when the main town of Rothesay would be bustling with trippers who had come “doon the watter” during the Glasgow Fair and disembarked from the many steamers that sailed the Clyde. The Paddle Steamer Waverley cruises the Firth, and it still proves a very popular attraction with a busy summer schedule of routes between Bute, Arran and the mainland. Rothesay seafront in the 19th century.
The classic Victorian seafront facade, promenade and pier in Rothesay were in fact built on land reclaimed from the sea. The original shoreline is about 200 metres inland in front of Rothesay Castle which once stood guard over the bay.
Bute has been occupied by man for over 5500 years. An exploration of the island will reveal standing stones, crypts and a vitrified fort in the south at Dunagoil Bay. Many archaeological finds are on display at the Bute Museum in Stuart St. Early Christian sites dedicated to St Ninian & St Blane speak of the missionary faith of the first inhabitants of Bute. The walks on Bute are really fantastic from very easy strolls to the more challenging.
Rothesay Castle Bute is the ancestral home of the Stuart Kings of Scotland. The 800 year old ruin of Rothesay castle was built by a hereditary High Steward of Scotland from which the surname Stewart, and later Stuart was derived. The circular design of the castle is unique in Scotland and withstood many onslaughts including an invasion by the Vikings. It was captured by the English during the wars of independence but in 1311 was retaken by Robert the Bruce. Partially destroyed by Oliver Cromwell’s troops in 1659 and finally burned and sacked by the Duke of Argyll in 1685 the castle has been substantially restored over the last 120 years.
Mount Stuart Under the 2nd Earl of Bute the Stuart family moved 7 miles to the south of Rothesay and built Mount Stuart House on an estate of 300 acres. This original Mount Stuart house was partially destroyed in a disastrous fire in 1877, however the 3rd Marquess of Bute was inspired by his artistic, religious and astrological interests to build one of the most magnificent Victorian Gothic mansions in the world. Over the centuries the Isle of Bute has attracted many people who savour the peace & quiet and the friendly reception afforded to incomers. Lord Attenborough, the acclaimed film director and actor has a home on the island, but one of Bute’s most colourful past residents was the 19th century Shakespearean actor Edmund Kean. Kean came from a humble background, but he became one of the most famous and wealthiest actors of his time.

Wonderful location views out of this world Schoolhouse heating fantastic, plenty of room for the grandkids comfortable beds . All in all a great stay would recommend.
Our third holiday on Bute, it's such a great place. We all love jumping in the sea and digging on Ettrick Bay! The lounge at Kildavannan is just lovely, so warm and amazing views as you sit in the window seats.
A short walk or drive from Ettrick Bay, Kildavannan Schoolhouse provided us with perfect accommodation for adults and children, plus a safe front garden for play. The view across to Arran is beautiful. We had everything we needed for our short stay and were sorry to have to leave. Definitely recommend.
So much to see and appreciate. My dog loved the beach right out front and we found old and new sights amazing. Scotts are so very kind and always helpful. Bravo to this country!
Stayed last year 6 of us the cottage is amazing so much space for families, and great location I coukd sit all day at the bay windows overlooking the sea. We got a rough week weather wise but that’s Scotland for you but we still enjoyed and the cottage makes it enjoyable and your not clambering over everyone due to Space, kitchen is filled with all u will ever need and more to do self catering although we do tend to eat out half the time. The onky criticism I would say u need to update the tv in lounge area as it’s not great on the eyes when ur trying to relax in the huge sofa in the evenings while kids in bed on the small screen need a bigger tv and the place would be perfect but that’s just our opinion as watching the euros and tennis was a strain on the eyes lol.
Comfy & cosy 5* even when tested by Stirm Babet!!!
The cottage is beautifully & abundantly furnished, The 3 shower/bathrooms are great - especially when we were 3 adults - and a Springer Spaniel! Having a master bedroom with en-suite on the ground floor was ideal My brother & sister celebrated my birthday in the house in the face of Storm Babet - a unique occurrence in Scotland- 54 mile an hour winds. No bother. Cosy & warm - absolutely - tested by the elements - 5* Great to view through the many windows overlooking the bay & beyond. We were there to reminisce the many childhood holidays we enjoyed on Bute in the 50’s 60’s 70’s & 80’s. We all enjoyed the comfort of Kildavannan Schoolhouse & will be back. Thank You from 3 newly retired & world travelled professionals.

Spectacular Views Cottage Needs TLC
A beautiful cottage with outstanding views. However the whole place looks tired and nears some tlc. It wouldnt take much.
My biggest complaint was when I stripped my 3 year old granddaughter's bed I was horrified to see she had been sleeping on a dirty mattress protector with old urine stains. On taking that off the mattress was also urine stained. I think that is unacceptable. I am not that sort of person that thinks they need to check stuff like that. I put my trust in companies. To be honest I dont go on holiday to start checking beds etc. We were horrified!
List.
Door outside light not working. Couldnt see the dogs when pottying without taking our phone torches. It was very difficult to see anything as it's pitch black at night there.
3 toilet rolls for 6 people for 3 days. No extras rolls. I dont expect to have to buy toilet rolls & think they should be in the price .
There was black mould on upstairs windows in the master bedroom. I suffer with my chest & asthma & it is unacceptable.
Light bulb missing at the bedside in master bedroom. So I wasnt able to read before bed.
Very cold downstairs bedroom as in artic cold. Wardrobe in front of radiator doesnt help.
Extractor fan just ridiculous. Makes a horrendous noise like a washing machine and the light above the hob doesnt work.
Emails and information out of date.
Ive emailed the manager Abigail regarding our stay but so far I have heard nothing back. It just needs some TLC and no urine stained mattresses.
Roomy, comfortable and well equipped house overlooking the sea. Lovely to sit in front garden on sunny days. Well equipped and clean, would recommend this property.
The property has a large lounge and conservatory. The main issue was the shower rooms had no extractor fans and the property became damp after a week of rain. The cutlery was limited with some chipped plates (which the owner was happy with but we were not).
A lovely property in a great location, highly recommended

Fabulous 3 bedroomed cottage with absolutely stunning views
This was our fifth consecutive stay in Kildavannan Schoolhouse which really says it all.
It is a luxurious, spacious and comfortable place to stay and fantastic for family holidays. This year we were lucky enough to have wonderful weather and made the most of the beautiful beaches which we had nearly to ourselves.
Will be booking again for next year!!
Beautiful location.
Excellent communication.
Had concerns over WI-FI for my daughter’s studying, but it was brilliant for such a remote location.
Very restful walking break.
Thank you
Arriving at the property to see all the views was just amazing the photos online did not do it justice! The peace and quiet of the neighbourhood and views of the seascape was breath taking!
The house itself is fantastic clean and comfortable like you wouldn’t believe and the fire place was just awesome! The kitchen was great everything we needed was there but the best part about this house was the bed OMG what a bed it was a fantastic night sleep and was top quality!
Anyone looking to stay at this property must do so it is great value for money and wonderful location and really wonderful lady to deal with!
Highly recommend!
We had a great time despite the awful weather.
It was a pity we were not able to use the wood burning stove though.
The house was great in all aspects otherwise.

So i think the owner and Vbro should up date the personal details ect for future referrence .The house was lovely although there are a few things needed attention in on suite the toilet seat one was broken and the other did not fit .The window ledges had dead flies on them qhen we arrived and the kitchen floor wasnt very clean and some plates were dirty .The conservatory windows needed a clean .All being that we enjoyed our stay .

Beautiful!
We enjoyed our first holiday in Scotland in Kilvannan Schoolhouse. The house itself is wonderful with lots of space (and bathrooms) for everyone and is set in a beautiful location!
We took various trips out 'island hopping' and the cycle hire and 10.5 mile cycle around the Isle of Cumbrae is a must!
The only slightly frustrating point was that in the 'general amenities' on the property listing it does say Internet is available, unfortunately there isn't, the house does have a few limited 'hot spots' for mobile data connection, but is very hit and miss. It may be worth planning your stay and days out before you arrive.
Una was lovely, hard working and a real pleasure to meet.
Have to say, our first visit to Scotland was superb!
Many thanks
Kate Moyle, Sevenoaks, Kent
The property was dirty the cooker/oven was disgusting.
The black mould, dead flies wasps and spiders did little to
Help our very dampened enthusiasm. Peeling paint leaking pipes
a shower door that came off and hit my husband on the head
Was dangerous. The smell of damp was like an unwelcome perfume.
I would like a refund of the hard earned money that I spent on this
Property. Where the cottage is positioned is beautiful. We left the
Property early because we couldn’t stay in the cottage any longer.
I have taken video of the property.

This was our third stay at this Cottage is fab but in need of wee spruce up especially carpets and I would be hiring new housekeepers very rude when we arrived early and I tried to explain I just wanted to drop of food I had in a cool box said 4.30 check in t0 which I responded no it’s 3 pm was jet with no it’s not u need to check ur communication I said no u need to check it out!1 they’re not doing good job at all!! I went around cleaning up myself as all they did was give lick and a polish which is not good enough esp when there’s been young kids and animals in property before you. Sogging wet nappy left behind the toilet in the en-suite only discovered when I was on my hands and knees cleaning floor cis the stench was overpowering and I thought there was a leak from toilet. They were only in the house 60 minutes as we were there before they arrived and we saw them leaving from the beach as we could not get access until they had finished. I love this cottage it’s perfect for our family and the owner is very attentive when you contact but needs to get the jobs done she is paying for. Few wee things that need attending too but overall amazing cottage everything you need at hand, beds comfy, lounge comfy, kitchen masses of items at hand. Would deffo go again
We stayed for 8 nights and we can hardly wait to come back! What a dream - quaint window seat with views out to Inchmarnoch and the Isle of Arran and Ettrick Bay. Large living space with very comfy sectional. Spacious kitchen with all amenities and well stocked with dishes and kitchenware. Beautiful bedrooms- comfortable mattress! with views. However, please note a beautiful space deserves a thorough cleaning and the freshness of new towels. Within walking distance to public transit and a lovely Cafe. Bird watching paradise! Private and with a lovely garden.
