A tank for a bottle of cognac?
This German “Königstiger II” was abandoned in the Belgian Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge (that started 75 years ago, in December 1944). Normally he would have been taken to be scrapped shortly after the war, but a woman from the village La Gleize (Jenny Geenen-Dewez, wife of a local inn-keeper) proposed the Americans who transported the Königstiger, to exchange the tank for a bottle of (French) cognac and ... they agreed! Believe it or not, this is a true story!
In 2015 the tank was repainted in its original colours. He is one of the 5 surviving tanks of this type in Europe.

The Königstiger II had 185 mm armour on the front of the cupola and was equipped with the famous 88 mm cannon. This cannon was one of the strongest cannons from WW II and could pierce the front armour of most Allied tanks (such as the T-34 and the M4 Sherman) up to a distance of 1500 metres. The range of the cannon was 10 kilometres.

"We really enjoyed our stay. Good beds, two bathrooms, living area far away from the bedrooms (a plus when traveling with small children), well stocked kitchen, great surroundings. And a very friendly host!"

"We hebben genoten van ons verblijf in dit huisje. De eigenaar was erg vriendelijk en gastvrij, wat meteen voor een warm welkom zorgde. De locatie is prachtig – midden in de natuur, perfect voor wie even helemaal tot rust wil komen. Het is wat afgelegen, maar dat vonden wij juist prettig. De faciliteiten waren volledig in orde, alles wat je nodig hebt was aanwezig en goed verzorgd. Al met al een prima plek om te verblijven, zeker als je kijkt naar de prijs-kwaliteitverhouding. "A lot of information on all outdoor activities (big map, lots of folders), however hardly any instructions on how to use the TV, the oven, etc. Otherwise very well equipped (kitchen, towels, even washing cloths (!)), and clean. Large parking lot Arbritel should warn that in this studio, one has to climb a very small ladder to the bed, where you cannot stand upright, because the slanted roof allows, at the lowest part of the roof, hardly any place for your feet. Hence I slept on the couch...
