The first segment of track to be rehabilitated following the declaration of the Ecuadorian Railways as a national heritage, the journey from Quito south towards the great colossus of Cotopaxi has been running since 2009. It remains one of the most beautiful and memorable in the country.
The journey begins at the historic train station of Chimbacalle, whose history dates back to when the Guayaquil to Quito railway was finally completed in 1908. Here, amid this friendly neighbourhood – a mix of residential homes and businesses – the train sets off for its route southwards along the famous ‘Avenue of the Volcanoes’, thus named by the great Prussian explorer, Alexander Von Humboldt.

The host was very responsive to all our questions about the area. Alex was the best onsite host and was our personal driver for local rides and excursions. I was able to read my books in the courtyard along with the sweet dogs that lived on the property and everyone that was around was extremely helpful and friendly. "This hotel far exceeded our expectations. The room was huge and spacious, and had amenities like the large jacuzzi tub. It is safe and quiet. We go to Quito a lot, and we usually stay at a different hotel. Because of scheduling, we ended up trying this hotel instead. Hotel Reina Isabel is our new go to hotel."

"Everything was excellent! James at the front desk really made us feel welcomed. He was super helpful arranging our transportation from and to the airport. He also set up breakfast boxes for our early departure. Breakfast at the hotel was really good. "
