General Robert Taylor (1787-1859), a planter and cotton merchant, built this Greek Revival home as a summer residence in 1839. Shortly thereafter he moved his family here permanently from Savannah in order for his sons to attend the University of Georgia. Henry Woodfin Grady (1850-1889) lived in this house from 1865 to 1868 while a student as the University. His father, William S. Grady, bought th house in 1863 and it remained in the family's possession until 1872. Henry Grady often referred to this house as "an old Southern home with its lofty pillars, and its white pigeons fluttering down through the golden air." The 13 Doric columns are said to represent the 13 original states. As managing editor of the Atlanta Constitution, Henry W. Grady became the spokesman of the New South. An impressive orator, he stressed the importance of reconciliation between North and South after the Civil War. The South today, with an economy balanced between industry and diversified agriculture, has made a reality of Grady's dream for his native region.

"This is will be my go too hotel in Athens from now on. It’s well managed, helpful staff, and the complementary snacks and free Pride flags were chef’s kiss! The only downside was the noise from the street and lobby area on the first floor. However, the hotel provides a white noise machine and ear plugs, and I slept well without using either. "

"I knew the location would be perfect, but I didn’t realize everything else would be so great about this hotel as well. The rooms were nicely appointed and plenty big enough for my son and me. We had a great view of campus. Parking was free. There were plenty areas to relax or set up your laptop and work. We received complimentary breakfast. There was even a small exercise room. This will be my first choice anytime we need a hotel in Athens. "

Outstanding Location in Athens

"VRBO is very nicely appointed; the king bed and sheets are great, bathroom and shower are top-end. I was there for two weeks, so having a W/D in the room was a huge bonus as was the pull out fridge and freezer drawers. One block off downtown meant easy walking access to restaurants. The coffee shop in the same building is very nice as well. "

"I travel to Athens for an annual conference. I had such a wonderful stay at this beautiful new hotel—it truly felt like a breath of fresh air. From the moment I checked in, I could tell that every detail was carefully considered to enhance the guest experience. The room was modern and cozy, with lighting that’s controlled by your key card—an energy-efficient and convenient touch. I especially loved the lighted mirror in the bathroom, which was perfect for doing my makeup, and the black makeup towel was such a thoughtful addition. Dining at the hotel’s restaurant was a highlight of my stay. My waitress was incredibly attentive and guided me through the menu with care. I had the best tiramisu I’ve ever tasted! They even customized a drink just for me and gifted me a few surprise treats, which made the experience feel extra special. Checkout was quick and efficient. Morning coffee from the in-house barista was also top-notch—and don’t skip the giant chocolate chip cookies; they are phenomenal! While the hotel is near the railroad tracks, they provide earplugs and a sound machine. I personally didn’t find the trains disruptive at all, especially since I didn’t spend much time in the room. Unfortunately, the rain kept me from enjoying the terrace, but I’m sure it’s a lovely spot in good weather. All in all, I’d definitely recommend this hotel and look forward to staying again!"

"Talk about a beautiful home! There was so much character to this place that you couldn’t, not enjoy your stay. With that- you have to remember the beauty when you walk through the apartment.. the floors are noisyyyyy. This would not have bothered me if my 6 month old wasn’t with us. That was the only downfall to this place, so just keep that in mind if you have little ones or light sleepers. The beds were comfortable(even the futon), it was clean and in a nice neighborhood. We will definitely consider staying again once my youngest is old enough not to be a pain to get back to sleep. "
