About this property
Shearwater Beach House : Walkerville North
Shearwater is a spacious four-bedroom home perched above Waratah Bay, looking out toward Wilson's Promontory and Bass Strait. South Gippsland, two hours from Melbourne.
Designed around its views, with floor-to-ceiling windows, light-filled and generously proportioned.
It's the kind of place that reveals itself slowly and stays with you long after you leave.
A home that feels cared for, not just cleaned between guests.
Fast internet, unlimited data.
The space
We always know when Shearwater lands — it's usually the first evening, when an upbeat message arrives out of nowhere. The fire, the upper deck, the sun dropping behind the Prom. It does that to people. And after all these years, it still makes us smile.
Perched in the Promontory Views Estate in Walkerville, South Gippsland, this spacious four-bedroom home looks out across Waratah Bay to Bass Strait and the wild, beautiful silhouette of Wilson's Promontory. It's the kind of view you don't get tired of.
The home is designed around its views — the main living areas, kitchen, dining table and fireplace all sit on the upper level, where the outlook across Waratah Bay to Wilson's Promontory is at its most spectacular. It's the kind of layout where you find yourself lingering over breakfast far longer than planned.
Light-filled and generously proportioned, Shearwater is designed for people who want room to breathe — two separate living areas, quiet nooks to disappear into, and enough space for everyone to gather or spread out as the mood takes them. It works beautifully for two families sharing a holiday, a large group of adults, or a single family who simply want space to exhale.
The fireplace is the heart of winter stays, and on rainy days there are games, books and toys to keep everyone happy — the kind of details that guests come back for. And many of them do.
We've thought carefully about what makes a large house feel like a genuine retreat rather than just a big rental — beds made up on arrival with fresh linen, a well-stocked kitchen ready to go, the BBQ primed, and the kind of practical touches that mean you arrive and immediately relax.
Shearwater sits within a small residential estate — there are neighbouring homes on either side. It's a quiet, respectful community and the property feels very private, but it's worth knowing you're not in complete isolation. Guests who appreciate that context tend to be the happiest here.
SLEEPING
The master bedroom sits on level one with a king bed, ensuite, walk-in wardrobe and a balcony with Prom views that will make it hard to get up in the morning. Bedroom 2 offers a king bed (which can be split into two king singles) with a nearby toilet. Downstairs, bedroom 3 has a queen bed with shared ensuite, and bedroom 4 has two singles that zip together to a king, also with shared ensuite. Linen and towels included — just bring your beach towels.
THE KITCHEN
The kitchen is the heart of Shearwater and it earns that title. Four-burner stove, oven, microwave, and enough coffee equipment to satisfy even the most serious morning ritual — DeLonghi espresso machine, grinder, stovetop pot and an 8-cup plunger. Basic pantry staples, condiments, and all the household essentials are stocked for you. The Weber BBQ with hood is out on the deck, ready to go.
EXPLORING THE REGION
Walkerville South is famously "Magic Beach" from Alison Lester's beloved children's book — and it lives up to the name. It's a two-minute drive from the house.
Beyond that, this corner of Victoria is genuinely extraordinary. Wilson's Promontory National Park entrance is 25 minutes away. Waratah Bay and Sandy Point are 15 minutes. The surf here is forgiving and ideal for introducing kids to the water. Cape Liptrap is harsh and beautiful and worth every step. Fish Creek has galleries, local produce and a great pub. The South Gippsland rail trails are perfect for riding or walking. And the whole Prom Country region — wineries, eateries, national parks — is right on your doorstep.
The birdlife and wildlife in this pocket of Victoria are extraordinary — an unexpected highlight that guests mention again and again.
Shearwater is two hours from Melbourne, with travel time meaningfully reduced by recent road improvements. It's an ideal base for a special occasion, a family Christmas, a milestone birthday, or simply a week of doing exactly as you please.
A GENUINE BUSH AND COASTAL ESCAPE
Part of what makes Shearwater special is exactly what makes it feel remote — it sits within a working coastal landscape. Like all our rural properties it runs on tank water and solar hot water, and is surrounded by beautiful old trees. Power outages are rare but possible in this part of the world — and we have an outage kit ready to go just in case. Guests who embrace the rural setting love it — it's part of what makes this feel genuinely away.
HOSTING STYLE
We're Fleur, Mike and the team behind Dufflebird Getaways — we've been hosting across Regional Victoria for over 20 years and we genuinely love helping guests get the most out of places like this.
Before you arrive you'll receive our local guide, and we're always happy to tailor recommendations to exactly what your group is looking for. We're always responsive, and we have a trusted local team on the ground if you ever need anything in person — but we'll leave you completely to your stay.
Many of our Shearwater guests come back — and we love that.
Guest access
The entire house and grounds are yours, other than a locked garage and cleaner's cupboard. Two car spaces in the driveway.
Well-behaved dogs welcome by prior arrangement — just ask us before booking. We ask that all dogs stay off furniture and beds and leave the house trace-free, so that every guest — including those with allergies — arrives to a fresh, clean space.
Other things to note
A Note on Pricing
Shearwater is a large home and we want it accessible for everyone. Rather than a flat higher rate, our base rate covers up to 4 guests — making it just as suited to a couple as a full house of eight — with an additional $50 per night per guest above that.
If you need to add guests after booking just message us and we'll send an amendment through.

Really enjoyed our stay great location lovely house, got to see lots of wildlife wombats snakes koala lots of birds very enjoyable would not hesitate to book again
We had a wonderful time at the house.
It was a home away from home with everything we needed. Full kitchen and laundry. Master bedroom was very generous size connected to the upstairs balcony.
Great family dinners were cooked up and lots of relaxing had in the 2 living areas.
Location was close to all our favourite beaches!!!
Prom views is a beautiful place to pause. We cosied up by the fire in the evenings, walked to the local lookouts and beaches, took drives to nearby towns, beaches and the prom. A great spot to explore south Gippsland if you want somewhere a little more remote. Property manager was great, responsive to concerns and accomodating of our fur baby too.
We had an amazing time away. The property was beautiful and such a lovely space to be away with friends. It was so relaxing and we are very grateful for the opportunity to stay at such a delightful property.
Fantastic private getaway! We loved everything about the house, Amazing kitchen, fireplace, views of the proms, great walks from the front door! Can’t wait to go back in summer.
The property welcomed us with open arms. Everything we needed was available, to make our stay relaxing. A number of interesting site seeing destinations very close by. Definitely recommend. Thank you for having us 😊
The house was very well appointed and very comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Fleur was a delight and was very helpful. The guide about where to go that was provided was great and the gift of local relish and jam was a lovely surprise.
Amazing property that accommodated all of us including our fur child. Beautiful home, close to great bush walks. Fleur was incredible and we’re able to unwind from the city and enjoy a relaxing week of regional bliss. Thank you for having us, we’ll definitely visit again!
Shearwater Beach House was a splendid setting for our family as it provided everything for a relaxed break. It is beautifully appointed and situated in a quiet and unspoilt location. Views across Waratah Bay to the Prom and endless walks if you're feeling energetic. Terrific Property!!
The house was warm and comfortable despite the gale force winds and driving rain!
The kitchen was well appointed and we had everything we needed to prepare home cooked meals.
Fleur the property manager was excellent to deal with - nothing was too much trouble for her.
Beautiful home in a very quite area of Walkerville.I was so impressed by Fleur ringing me prior to our check in and giving me the opportunity to ask questions etc.Shear water is beautiful and the view from our master bedroom was amazing.I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who needs a time out with a touch of luxury-Thankyou for allowing us to stay there
We had a lovely stay at Shearwater, it's a beautiful property and is well fitted out with everything you need. Safe and fun for kids, too, with a fence on the stairs and toys that our toddler loved rummaging in. We loved the area and want to go back because there is so much to see. The house was a bit more drive in and out, but probably more accessible walking if you're with mostly adults or older kids. We were there in winter so a lot was closed for the season, but we didn't mind, we were looking for a getaway and lots of puzzles and Catan rounds by the fire were enjoyed after windy beach walks. Thank you for having us!

Delightful stay at Shearwater
We'd highly recommend a holiday at Shearwater, having just come back from a fantastic weekend away. The house is modern and comfortable, and the views of Wilsons Prom from the balcony are stunning.
We were a group of six, and found the beds comfortable, with good sound separation (great for sleeping in!), amazing hot showers, a great kitchen equipped with all the things you'd need to self-cater, wi-fi and lots of space for big groups.
The house is beautifully furnished, and well located for a range of walks and outdoor adventures.
My favourite part was a peaceful morning coffee (from the handy espresso machine!) - sitting on the sunny deck, looking out at the Prom and watching the local birdlife.
Thanks for a relaxing stay. We can't wait to come back - we'll be booking for a week next time!
We had a wonderful 3 days at Shearwater. The house was perfect for us and did not disappoint from what we could see online. We really couldn't fault it in terms of cleanliness and functionality. The kitchen was very well stocked with essentials as well as every utensil and food prep item we needed. Had a lovely couple of nights on the balcony enjoying the views and the stars after dinner and the back yard served us well for a few games of Kubb. A big Thanks to Fleur who communicated brilliantly and even set up a spare bed in case we had a snorer in the group! Very thoughtful.
Looking forward to our next stay!
Fleur was incredible to communicate with for our stay. All members of the group were beyond satisfied with the location, property and neighbourhood. Would recommend!
