The Neighborhood:
Aside from being host to the United States Congress, Capitol Hill is the largest historic neighborhood in Washington DC. Stretching from the East Front of the United States Capitol, it is one of the oldest residential communities in the nation. Capitol Hill is the center of Washington, DC and the Eastern Market neighborhood is the heart of Capitol Hill. From our historic townhouse, the sidewalk cafes, restaurants, Miracle Theater, and lively nightlife of Barracks Row are a five minute walk. One block away, the Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital showcases art galleries, performing artists and intimate events with national newsmakers. Two blocks further, an enclosed playground includes sculptures and a large splash pad - perfect for kiddos!
The star of the neighborhood is the Eastern Market itself, which is about an 8 minute walk from the home. The 19th-century brick building is open daily with a wide range of stalls selling fresh food, local produce, art and crafts, fresh flowers, baked goods, candles, to artisan cheeses and unique DC souvenirs. It is a perfect place to find a little something to remember your trip. The weekend market on Saturday & Sunday is not to be missed with artists and street vendors outside selling crafts, memorabilia, artwork, pottery and unique gifts! Capitol Hill Books, located right in the middle of the market, is our personal favorite pre-owned bookstore. It's cramped with towers of books from floor to ceiling - magical!
Getting Around:
The closest metro is Eastern Market which is under a 4 minute walk from the property with quick access to stops across the city. You're also a very short walk, bus, metro or Uber ride from a number of other neighborhoods not to be missed including The Wharf, Chinatown, Gallaudet University, and the Navy Yard. Baseball fans will love the quick access to the Washington Nationals stadium at the Navy Yard.
