Cross the dramatic 12th-century stone bridge to explore Besalú's perfectly preserved medieval Jewish quarter and Romanesque monastery. Photograph the town's honey-colored buildings from Plaza Mayor before sampling traditional Catalan cuisine at family-run restaurants along the cobblestone streets.

To capture one of the best views of the medieval city of Besalú, backed by the snow-capped Pyrenees, you'll need to walk slightly out of town. From the tourist office, head across the car park in a southerly direction and take the road straight on that runs parallel to the river Fluvia. When you reach a t-junction, the right hand fork is signposted “camping,” but you’ll need to turn left. The tarmac road heads uphill. Keep following it until you reach a right hand turn that leads off into a field and towards a farmhouse. Around here is the brow of the hill and offers a stunning view down on to Besalú. I’d recommend heading up here around 9 or 10am, in order to capture the city bathed in the early morning sunlight. "I researched all the hotels of Girona before my trip and wasn’t sure whether or not to pick Nord 1901 as the reviews were quite mixed, but I’m really pleased I did. The best thing about the hotel is the location, which is ideal for exploring the most interesting and beautiful parts of the city. The hotel is just round the corner from the bridge to the old town, next to a lovely square and a bustling shopping street. Yet it was still very quiet at night. The room was huge, almost to the point of feeling a bit bare! The bed was comfortable and I slept deeply on both nights of my stay. Shower pressure was spot on. Staff were helpful and polite. Overall, the hotel is a little old fashioned in style but at this price point, for the size of the room and the hotel location, it’s a really good deal. "
