The Shakespeare is very much a funky "character hotel", and it's 100+ year history shows in good and less so ways. Anyone who has stayed in Paris knows what a 4 storey walk up is like - all those stairs can be a challenge, especially with luggage. But the "vibe" is very cool, and it's all the old architectural details that make it such a unique experience. The excellent in-house kitchen and brewery made for very good dinners and tasty beers, and thestaff were nice, especially manager(?), Siddartha, was friendly and efficient, helping us with parking arrangements and guest discounts on meals.
Our 2 rooms on the top floor were acceptable, but not great. Carpets and showers were in need of a deep clean (and one shower had drain issues), and there was nowhere to hang jackets or clothes (although 2 hangers provided on door knob), and only one had a chair to sit on. But sheets were clean, beds comfy, and the small fridges did their job. But the price was reasonable, especially for the CBD location - within walking distance of shops, Weta, the art museum, harbour etc. We would stay again.
