Howler Monkey was an interesting little place. Family run and in a fairly remote location so we saw enormous, 5 ft. orange iguanas along the river (take binoculars to see them better) and heard the howlers in the area. However, the place could use some work - cleaning, painting, general maintenance, etc. And it is not a 'resort' by most American's description. Our particular cabin was fine but also needed a little TLC. It was 2 doubles with a bathroom door that hit the one bed. And we had a pad lock to use on the door from the inside when there, and then from the outside when leaving. Rustic is a good description and trust me, it's not for everyone. We had an excellent dinner prepared by the family - you do not choose your meal, it is whatever is getting prepared that day. Our meal had plenty of grilled chicken and 2 local vegetarian sides plus dessert. Excellent home cooking. But not resort food. Another couple we met didn't have as good of an experience the night before with a poached meat, potatoes & broccoli. They said ours looked far better. Luck of the draw I guess. Finally, take a book or plan to play a game in the evening. Wireless is only in the common area and is spotty. And unless you want to drive a 1/2 hour to the nearest town, there is nothing to do. You are in a remote area and it's dark. So if you like rustic (thus affordable) accommodations, a chance to see some great wildlife, are an adventurous eater and enjoy some downtime - this is for you!
The unique setting of the accommodation in the peace of the forest near the river is amazing. Just lounging outside and watching the wildlife is incredibly relaxing. The resort is family run business and everyone is focused on making your stay enjoyable. The breakfasts and dinners were absolutely amazing! We also really enjoyed our trips with Yusef.
Hosts were fantastic. The grounds are beautiful and there are indeed monkeys. The room was typical to what we saw elsewhere in Belize. We included the dinner and breakfast with our room and the food was great...served family style, generous portions.
The wildlife at this place is amazing! So many birds, lizards, etc. We didn’t see any howler monkeys at the resort because they are wild, but we definitely heard them. The hosts are great, helpful, and the place is well maintained. There isn’t a ton to do/eat around the area without driving a bit, so a rental car is helpful. Also, it’s nice to be a little adventurous and ok with seeing large insects/lizards etc because you will probably see them!

Stayed in the Treehouse cabin
This property is located in the jungle. There is not really much nearby and public transit and taxis are limited here, especially on holidays. Make sure to pre-order food from the hotel or you might end up very hungry. The one restaurant in the area was closed for Easter Monday but they still offered us some of what they had cooked for their own dinner, which was bamboo chicken, aka iguana. Since we weren't brave enough to try the iguana the hotel was able to provide us with dinner on short notice (I got the impression that it was a huge exception to do this without notice). The food cooked was for 2 people but enough to feed 4 and it was delicious. There is no menu and no choice to what you are served so picky people might starve here. We were served 4 large pieces of callaloo lasagna, with fried plantain and about 6 large pieces of tilapia as well as dessert. It was the best meal I had while in Belize.
The highlight of the property is the proximity to the howler monkeys. Although we did not see any on the property you can constantly hear them off in the distance.
My only real complaint was the shower, as the shower head kind of sprays everywhere. The shower is very small and the floor tended to get flooded every time we showered.
