We were attracted to the idea of a real-life log cabin and wanted an authentic Appalachian experience. The cabin was hand-built by Bud and the interior is filled with family history. The horses next door and the chickens across the street added to the charm. Sonya and Bud were also lovely hosts.
We have been coming here now for 3 years. We enjoyed it everytime so much so that we brought friends with us. The cabin is so charming and quaint. You will thoroughly enjoy it. The owner, Mr. Gabbard brought us fresh eggs. He is absolutely a pleasure!

Cabin was rustic and very comfortable. Decorations and pictures were very interesting. Saw some thing new every time I walked through. The welcome gift card was very thoughtful. Enjoyed hearing the roosters crow in the morning and the visits from Toby the cat.
A easy drive to the Red River Gorge but far enough away to avoid the crowds.
Absolutely recommend.
We wanted a weekend away from home stressors and this was perfect. Close enough to tourist adventures and far enough away from the city that it was the perfect weekend. Melvin and his daughter Sonia were both very sweet. Melvin met us in town and drive us to the cabin as the gps was a little lost. The cabin had everything we needed to stay in and the local diner served a very nice meal that we didn’t have to clean up after 😀
The fried green tomatoes and the corn bread salad at the Bus Stop Diner we’re the best.
I can't say enough about our experience with the gracious Gabbards and their lovely cabin. My family and I were so impressed with how thoughtful the Gabbards we're in equipping the cabin with everything a person could need. I forgot to pack shampoo and ibuprofen but to my delight it was already stocked.
I loved the hominess if the cabin and the personal photos of the family. You can feel the love of the family in their we'll constructed and revered cabin that was built by hand by the proprietor.
In addition to the warmth and kindness of Mr Gabbard- the cabin faces a beautiful pasture with 2 of the sweetest gentlest horses my family and I ever encountered. They would have let us pet them all day if we wanted.
In closing, if you want an extremely well equipped cabin in a beautiful setting owned by salt of the earth cabin, I highly recommend Mountain Memories.
We had a great time this weekend. The owners of the cabin were very nice and helpful. They brought over a grill for us to BBQ. We would definitely recommend this cabin for anyone looking for a peaceful vacation. The cabin is very nice. We would rate our overall experience a 10/10.
What an adorable, thoughtfully and lovingly appointed cabin! We loved staying here and had everything we needed for a good family trip readily available - from toilet paper and essentials, to a Keurig and electric can opener, to lots of extra pillows and blankets and towels, there wasn't hardly a thing we needed to bring besides ourselves.
Check in was super easy, as the property owner lives right across the street. We showed up, knocked on the door, and Mr. Gabbard came over and walked us in. The gravel driveway is a little bit steep, so make sure you come in with a little momentum and a time or two of practice, and we got right on up after that! Mr. Gabbard shared about the cabin, family photos and stories like that he and his cousin built the cabin with their own hands, and how it held a lot of memories for them, which was really cool to hear and helped us feel connected to the cabin and the family who actually built it.
Sonya was always quick to answer and help us along through VRBO since we were unfamiliar with the area, and her ability to do that was a huge reason we decided to stay here.
The cabin itself was super clean, cozy, and warm. There is a wrap around porch with two swings to enjoy. It is next to a road that has some light traffic, and few ATVs, but it is sporadic and mostly folks who live in the area, it seems. The cabin backs up to a hillside pasture with a couple of sweet horses, and across the street from Mr. Gabbard's chicken coop! For not being from the area, and being out in the country/hills, it was nice to know there was an actual person there close by if we had any issues or an emergency, or just for general safety.
Booneville is super small, but the folks all were kind and there are essentials like grocery, gas, local restaurant, Dollar General, so you don't have to go all the way to a larger town for the necessities. But we were close enough to get to the tourist attractions of Red River within 40 minutes.
The living space was cozy and I feel like staying a little bit away from the tourist heavy area gave us more space/amenities than if we stayed right in Red River.
The space is open floor plan with a queen bed in the loft, two twin beds and a full size bed on the opposite side of the main living room/kitchen area. There is a TV with Amazon Prime, Wifi, and we could sign into our own Netflix, which was really nice for the kids.
If you are looking for a true, handbuilt family cabin, this is it!
