About this property
Casa Mango, Puntarenas, Costa Rica
A Great Place to hang out !
Here at Casa Mango we have fantastic pool with a big rancho. The rancho has a gas stove with tables for preparing and eating food. Sun chairs if you wish to lay back and soak up the sun. There is also a spectacular Deck over looking the water. Also a great place to eat your meals, drink the morning coffee, or just take in the view and enjoy the breeze. Inside we have a 46in flat screen TV with WiFi, and Netflix. A Bluetooth sound bar that can be brought outside to the rancho or deck, both have electricity. Refrigerator with Ice Machine and filtered water. Ceiling fans throughout the house. A/C in the bedrooms, and one in the main living area for those really hot days. Fully equipped kitchen, secure parking, hot water showers with good pressure. Comfortable mattresses, and a washing machine.
Casa Mango is a quaint, rustic house restored to its former glory and updated to make your stay the best it can be. Right on the tip of the peninsula, Santa Eduviges. The place is located right on the Estero River from Puntarenas. We have a great view from our deck over looking the water to the "Angostura" from Puntarenas. There is no other place like this in Costa Rica. We are also conveniently located only 5 miles to the Ferry, supermarkets, bakery, and pulperia. We are in a "Real Tico Neighborhood" not a million dollar villa on top of a hill where you don't see or hear a soul. Our place is right where life goes on. This is how people really live in Costa Rica. The neighbors are mostly fisherman and retired people. All are friendly, humble, and working class. There is always some movement on the water, boats come and go all day. It's great sitting on the deck and watching the tides come and go, it's a forever changing landscape. There are many species of birds around all day including the occasional Scarlet Macaw, often seen flying in pairs or even eating from the tree right next to the deck. You can also fish from the deck, or even from the private pier we have on the property. You'll catch mostly catfish with an occasional stingray.
Going to Puntarenas at night is an experience as well with all the street food vendors and people hanging out on the board walk.
The bus stop is on the next corner, the bus will take you to Chacarita, Puntarenas Center, El Roble and other locations. The public bus station is just 100m away.
My Girlfriend Mariela and I live next door with our dogs Moka and Canela. 2 sweet pits that I've had since puppys. And although the houses are completely separated and private from each other, the dogs often roam both property's.

We had a fantastic stay! We did not get to meet Josh, but Mariela was a great host and took care of everything we needed! She was an amazing host on top of recommending several spots we should visit, and none of them disappointed. The place had all of the amenities we needed, and we felt comfortable staying here with the locking gate. The pool was a plus and made our stay more enjoyable. We would return to this place.
it was a very private relaxing place to stay. We loved watching the birds and boats go by. The weather was great! It was so lovely to have a pool to bask next to.Josh was really friendly and hepful. He is what made our stay feel like home!
We enjoyed staying at Casa Mango. True to it's name, there are mangos hanging off the big tree ready to eat or as we did, make mango margaritas! Josh is an excellent host and his girlfriend, Mariela, is an great cook. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast (gallo pinto/eggs), fab dinner (Arroz con Pollo) and the best pina coladas ever! The river/estuary views are every changing with the tides. Overall, it's a hidden paradise in a typical Costa Rican neighborhood.
Casa mango was a great pick. The host Josh and Mari where great in ever way from advice and knowledge of costa rica to accommodating any request we had. Beautiful compound with a pool all to our self. Very good location about 1 hour from all you want to do in costa rica. I felt very safe at the place and in the town. Josh also has great contacts for very reasonable rental cars and fresh fish and steaks and the local groceries. Cant wait to go back.seemed like i was the only tourist around until i went to were they all swarm too.Thank you Josh for having us..

Josh and Mariela are great and he casa was okay, an oasis in a poor area, at the end of a bus line to Puntarenas only 75m away. Bird watching on the estuary is great. The neighbors dogs and roosters start early along with 2 stroke fishing biats around 4:30. Worst things are a bar 50 meters actoss the river open all night sometimes, very loud and throwing garbage into the riner. The neighbors are burning every day, many with the wind pushing smoke into tbe unit.. Make sure to have ear plugs and binoculars
This was our 2nd time staying at Casa Mango. We enjoyed it so much last year we came back! Josh was amazing once again. He picked us up at the airport to start our 2nd Puntarenas journey. We were able to take the city bus basically from our "door" and go to the market downtown, Nicoya Beach, restaurants, the ferry & eat a little street food too!Having a pool on site and AC was definitely an added benefit. Laundry available and a clothesline. Sitting on the deck at night was one of our favorites. Winding down the day with a cocktail and a card game.Hoping the boat will be up and running next year. Josh & Mariela took us on a couple group excursions last year to different beaches and islands. They have done multiple upgrades to the property to make our (and your!) stay even better.Thank you, Josh & Mariela, for everything! See you next year!! Say hi to the girls from us :)
We had a very relaxing and enjoyable 3 weeks at Casa Mango in Chacarita, Puntarenas in Feb 2025, we wanted a small local place to see wildlife , relax and enjoy the climate and culture that is Costa Rica. The small private home is located on an estuary and we enjoyed watching the tide changes ,it was interesting with all the different types of birds and local fishing boats .We spent a lot of time on the shaded porch , usually we had a nice breeze, reading and dining, and just watching the variety of birds . We also went to the beach in Puntarenas a few times and some beautiful waterfalls near by called Encantado. The air conditioned house was newly upgraded, very clean, has two good size bedrooms with ensuites and comfortable beds .There is also a well stocked functional kitchen with lots of plants and shade outside. The private pool was perfect, the sun shelter added shade in the afternoons.Josh and Mari were excellent hosts, very friendly and very responsive if we had a questions or needed anything, and very helpful at all times. We really enjoyed getting to know them and their dogs, Canella and Mocha! Josh was doing maintenance on his boat while we were there so we will do Isla Tortuga next time! We also met several very nice and interesting travellers who stopped at the adjacent camping area! Overall, we had a great time , one of our most relaxing vacations ever and look forward to returning for another visit in the future !
In the heart of the Costa Rican locals, you have a little oasis to call your own. We were greeted with above and beyond hospitality and felt safe at home. The three big dogs, and the ability to wash clothes were an extra bonus. Thank you so much for the stay. Highly recommend and hopefully be back soon!!!!
Once again Josh & Mari didn't disappoint. We had a lot of travel issues and they were there for us each time. Thanks again for the great hospitality and hugs.
We were leery as we approached the “green gate” but once they were opened a paradise revealed itself!!
Mike and Luisa couldn’t have been more attentive and helpful on the area, with where to shop and suggestions of tours to take.
Oso their dog made us feel closer to home and our pups on the ranch who we were missing.
We spent 5 nights at Casa Lilu. We enjoyed visiting with the hosts, Mike and Louisa. They are wonderful people. Their dog, Oso, was such a joy. My husband and I played with him daily. The house has everything needed to cook and feel comfortable. We enjoyed sitting on the deck watching the fishing boats come and go. It was also where we had coffee every morning and dinner every evening. It was a thrill to watch the birds catch fish. We swam in the pool daily and read books in the lounge chairs. It was a super nice experience to stay there.
This property is located in the typical Costa Rica village. People are mostly fishing for leaving there. The owners are very nice and helpful. We had a beautiful balcony right on the river for all our meals and relaxing time. It is a birds paradise. We enjoyed watching them especially during low tide. A pool was very nice after a hot day.
You also can walk to the ocean through the village. It takes about 10-15 minutes. We really took advantage of 2 bikes on the property. There is a biking trail along the ocean. To get there we had to ride bikes to the bridge over the canal. The bridge looks a little scary but once you cross it and see local people using it every day, it becomes normal.
The river the house is built on is beautiful. Our only regret was that we could not rent kayaks. We can only imagine how many days we could spend on the water.
This property is about 2 hours from Arenal, Manuel Antonio and other popular attractions. Make sure that it fits your trip.
Thank you Lisa and Mike for a beautiful stay.
Topp!!!
We wanted to get away from our daily, city-like routines, and have some peace and quite while enjoying ourselves in a marine setting. We got it! The facilities were beyond our expectations in all aspects. The greenery around us, the swimming pool, the deck by the water, the fully-equipped house, the cleanliness, the privacy and safety within the property... everything was perfect. And above all, our hosts! Welcoming, friendly, respectful, helpful, interesting... always willing and ready to make our stay perfectly pleasant. Thank you very much!
We very much enjoyed our stay at Casa Lilu. Mike and Luisa are so helpful and kind. The house and grounds are unique and so inviting. Sitting areas except for dining table are outside, but outdoor patio is covered and has a TV. Felt a bit unsure as we drove down the road to the house, but we felt very safe and liked spending time in a less touristy area. We could do many excursions in the morning and then enjoyed spending the late afternoons relaxing at the house. Mike runs a boat tour business that goes to the Tortuga Island so if you are there on the weekend you might be able to book with him to make that visit too!
My husband and I enjoyed this truly hidden gem. The home was very clean and large with air conditioning in bedroom and a very well supplied kitchen. Our favorite pastime was sitting on the patio with front row views of estuary and canal and watching the many birds including pelicans, frigate birds, egrets, ibises and others. Many small boats passed by throughout the day. A lovely pool, nice gardens and great hosts made our stay special.
The owners also have a boat and we enjoyed an affordable day trip to Tortuga Island. We also drove to nearby peninsula for casual eating and walking around with many locals doing the same.
Mike and Luisa were probably the best hosts we have had through airbnd and vrbo. And we have had quite a few vacations in Canada, Europe and Scandinavia. They were very welcoming and helpful. I believe we have made some friends and if we are ever back in CR, we will stay here!
And the pool was a great asset!
Thank you Mike and Luisa!
My daughter and I had the pleasure of staying on this beautiful property. Our stay was at the end of January and we got to enjoy the beautiful river views, nice-sized pool, and comfy living space. Mike and Luisa were wonderful hosts! The location was close to the ferry, which took us to the other side of the bay. We spent the days lounging in the sun or exploring the city and its attractions. Mike had great recommendations on where to go and what to see. Staying here allows you to see what it really feels like to live in a typical Costa Rican neighborhood. We would highly recommend this listing!
This was an ideal place to spend four weeks experiencing neighborhood life in Costa Rica. There are small shops within walking distance for most of what we needed and door-to-door vendors for produce and eggs. The bus stop is just outside the gate providing convenient access to Puntarenas which is an interesting place to explore.
We enjoyed our time on the deck watching birds and wildlife, boats and fishermen, and the changing tides. It was a convenient base for day trips including San Ramon, Natuwa and Tivives Beach.
Mike and Luisa are tremendous hosts - friendly, kind and helpful. The description and photos had us knowing exactly what to expect. We also really enjoyed meeting the campers that stay in the parking area, that was bonus.
Mike and Luisa are friends for life! Like I said when I said "Hasta luego" you can't get rid of me this easy - I WILL be back!
I just cannot impress upon you enough the hospitality and joy Mike and Luisa brought to my first Costa Rica adventure. I learned so much about Puntarenas and neighboring areas during dinner and/or drinks on that fabulous deck. Luisa took me everywhere I needed to go when I was at the house and introduced to people who gave me the VIP treatment on boat tour w/o paying the VIP prices :) She even took me on a bike ride and we a rode in a "cup" across the river! LOL had to be there......
When I was traveling all the many places I went they were well w/in a 2 to 3.5 hour drive. This is the ONLY place to stay if you want to keep a home base while traveling all other areas in this beautiful and inviting country. That was one of the best parts was coming "home" after a 3 to 4 day trip. They were always there to open the gate and welcome me HOME! Love you guys!
When driving to Casa Lilu, you get an appreciation for the Tica experience mentioned in the description. Then the gate is opened and you are in your private resort at the confluence of the two rivers and the ever changing tide convinces you to sit back and watch the world go by.
The house is very well stocked, particularly the kitchen, the rooms are comfortable, the A/C works well (for the 20 or so minutes we had it on because the weather was perfect !), the internet is strong and consistent, the pool is crystal clear, and the grounds are well maintained by the on-site manager.
Security is important for us and Casa Lilu is a tranquil spot in the midst of an authentic/genuine working Tico town.
Our week was wonderful and although it was hard to leave our oasis, we were able to visit many coastal area towns and beaches nearby, always certain to be back by sundown to relax on the deck, check on the tides, and enjoy the marvelous sunsets!
