About this property

Belvedere on the Potomac — Historic Riverfront Estate

  • Welcome to The Belvedere on the Potomac, a historic riverfront estate perched above one of the most scenic stretches of the Potomac River. This remarkable property offers sweeping 180-degree panoramic views of the water, a setting that has captivated visitors for more than two centuries.

Built around 1790, the home was thoughtfully positioned to take full advantage of the surrounding landscape. Today, guests enjoy the same breathtaking scenery that generations before them admired — from the home’s decks, patios, balconies, and the expansive lawn that gently slopes toward the river.

The Belvedere sits beside Dam No. 5, an area rich in American history. During both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, this stretch of the Potomac served as an important crossing point near an old mill and river ford. While the battles are long past, the history of the region still echoes throughout the landscape.

Nature surrounds the property. A dramatic natural rock formation rises behind the house, while a stately colonnade of towering old trees marks one edge of the grounds. Bald eagles, Canadian geese, deer, and other wildlife are frequent visitors, making mornings along the river especially memorable.

The riverfront setting makes the Belvedere an ideal place to relax and reconnect with nature. Guests often bring boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and fishing gear, or simply enjoy the peaceful views and quiet rhythm of the river.

Inside, the home blends historic character with modern comforts. The East Wing Saloon features a wet bar, bar refrigerator, and under-counter ice maker — the perfect place to gather and unwind after a day spent on the water.

Coming in late 2026: a new natural stone water feature and hot spring–style grotto retreat, designed to blend into the surrounding rock landscape and provide a relaxing place for guests to unwind while taking in the beauty of the property.

Whether you are here for a quiet retreat, a river adventure, or simply to experience one of the most unique historic properties in the region, The Belvedere offers a stay that is truly one of a kind.

As naturalist John Burroughs once wrote: “I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.”

At the Belvedere, that experience comes naturally.
