"Historic castle. Truly historic. You may even meet Lord and Lady Bellew. The grounds are extensive and beautiful, especially the walled garden, and it is clear that a great deal of work goes into maintaining the property. Our children loved the lake, the ducks, and the beautiful free-roaming dogs and puppy. It was a really memorable setting for our family reunion. The house itself is comfortable, with en suite bedrooms, though guests should expect historic-house charm rather than hotel-style luxury. The bathrooms are functional rather than luxurious, and there were not amenities such as shampoo provided. We also noticed some loud mechanical noises overnight, particularly from the hot water heater room. The only real frustration was that the hot water was accidentally off during our stay. There may have been an expectation that guests would know how to turn it on, but as Americans this was not familiar to us, and unfortunately our message to the host went unanswered, so we ended up with cold showers. Guests should also be prepared for detailed food-waste and recycling rules, with multiple bins to sort food into. That said, Oliver was kind enough to allow 13 of us to stay rather than the stated maximum of 12, which we appreciated. Overall, we highly recommend this incredible property. You really do feel like you are part of history."
