Would definitely stay again! The house is so unique and we loved the decor. Wish we had more time to just stay and enjoy the space. Close to ocean, shopping, food. Thanks again for sharing your home! We had a great stay.

We arrived to find a beautiful plate of papaya and a fridge full of beverages for us to enjoy. Very charming guest house and kind hostess! Nice location for visiting the highlights of Hilo.

The stories behind the items carefully curated in this lovely home could, I’m sure, fill a couple volumes of travel books. Inside and out, this place is welcoming and homey. The host is friendly and responsive. A great place to stay.

This was a fabulous place to relax after a long day in Kalapana. It was a very short drive to the waterfront restaurants in Hilo ( we would have walked if not for the rain :) and would stay again. The history and culture in the settings was very comfortable to stay in.

The home make you instantly feel part of Hilo. Very clean with comfortable bed. We really appreciated all the conveniences provided that made our stay very enjoyable. A special treat was listening to the music of a Hawaiian artist promoted on the refrigerator with a glass of wine in the fabulous sitting room.

We couldn't have had a better host for our visit to Hilo. She was welcoming and generous with her home and advice. She had papaya and cake waiting for us and she even gave us the recipe for the cake. The house was eclectic and it was just what we wanted. It was a great stay and would certainly go back.

We stayed for a week and had a lovely time at the Guesthouse. The bed was very comfortable and it was so nice to have AC in the bedroom at night. The patio is large and covered which made it so pleasant to sit out in the lovely garden while it is raining. We enjoyed the fresh fruit and croissants that Kawehi thoughtfully provided! The neighborhood is quiet and close to downtown. We look forward to returning again soon. Thank you Kawehi for being such a great Hostess!

I couldn't have asked for a more delightful, comfortable, private and centrally located lodging to all the places Hilo and the Big Island have to offer. It felt like my own little Hawaiian cottage. Kawehi was as helpful and available as one needs her to be and I feel like I made a dear friend. I would return in a heartbeat!!

Our hostess Kawehi was very gracious. She introduced herself but otherwise respected our privacy. The guesthouse was set up exceedingly well, with very clear and helpful notecards. It was also charmingly decorated and incredibly spacious for two people. Everything was just flawlessly executed and we couldn't be more pleased. Thank you!

We were surprised by how big the place was. Two big porches for eating and relaxing and ahuge living room with seperate tv room. The ac in the bedroom was most welcome. Pastries and mango upon arrival, easy in and out, convenient to be downtown and the sights. Could not havebeen better. No view but a beautiful garden was a great substitute.

All are wonderful. The property will be more better if it’s AC is new machine . Old machine noise is too big to sleep.

This is an absolutely lovely home with lots of space and attention to detail! We found it charming from the moment we walked in, and it’s very well supplied; even rather surprising, considering that it’s right near downtown. (We didn’t get a chance to meet our hostess, but we got the impression that it’s her family home.) We really enjoyed all of the decor (many truly fascinating things abound), along with the quaint way the guest yard is fashioned, as well as the various comfortable seating areas on the big lanai. This is an excellent choice for any discerning traveler and, if we ever need a spot in Hilo, we’d love to stay here again.

Kawehi was one of the better VRBO hosts we have encountered, with daily fresh Papaya left in the frig, daily trash and towel service and welcoming information. Decorated creatively. Great lighting on timers indoor and out made us feel secure at night. Open air quarters made it Hawai’i authentic (versus a timeshare we stayed in the first week). Bird feeder attracted dozens of beautiful birds. Five different seating areas for lounging and eating was very creative. Well equipped kitchen. Books and maps and slippers and blankets for the cool evenings.... Easy to get south to Volcano, west to Mauna Kea and north to Waipio. Loved it!

This was our 5th visit to the Big Island and we wanted to spend some time exploring Hilo. Hale Kawehi was perfect for us. We were wowed by the ad in VRBO and, on arrival, found the place delightful. It is located on a relatively quiet street and in walking distance of downtown restaurants and shopping. The kitchen is supplied with about everything we needed and we felt quite at home and enjoyed our meals we prepared there. Hilo is conveniently located for visits to Hawaii Volcanoes NP, Akaka Falls and up the North Hilo and Hamakua coast, and was a cozy place to return to in the evening. We only had a brief conversation with Kawehi, and found her to be a very cordial host. We will probably stay there again in the future, if it is available. Our stay there was an important component of a very enjoyable vacation.

The amenities are very misleading! There is a tub, where you can stand to take a shower(no tub stopper) and owner seemed shocked you might want to use tub.The washer and dryer is the owners, for 5.00 she will do a load of laundry for you.Biggest shocker...owner appears at bedroom door ,after we had gone to bed, having let herself in from a door inside of rental(not front door)scared the heck out of us😳☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️

We stayed in Hilo during the third week of sept. The property was everything we had hoped for. When we pulled in there was a parking space right next to the entry so getting settled was a matter of minutes. Every room is full of interesting surprises. The space is large and gives you plenty of indoor and outdoor living. We absolutely loved the garden area and spent much of our time out on the deck next to it. This space is secluded and gives the feeling of being in a little private rain forest. Our stay was partly sunny with rain coming mostly in the evenings or during the night. This created a cozy sleeping environment with the sound of the geckos and soft rain. The bed is soft and the bathroom is close by. We enjoyed each room. There were litteraly hundreds of little pieces of Hawian history. Some spaces had the feel of a well desiged small museum. Our host Kawehi, was gracious and supplied us with unexpected pastries, and breakfast munchies. It was a pleasure to meet and talk with her. We want our vacations to feel like unique destinations. This one gets 5 out of 5! We can’t wait to return. Frank and Susanne Henderson

The pictures do not accurately show how interesting this place is. the magical feel of being in this space. Especially when you enter in the evening. The little quarter sized frogs sing amongst themselves at night. I thought i was transported in a magical fairy-tale. The vintage and curated peices are such a pleasure to look at and i can just imagine the stories that are behind them. The owner must have alot to share about the items, such as the golfing sign. I bet theres a story there. All needed supplies available in this space. I enjoyed having everything at my fingertips even if i don't use it. The openness and generosity if the owner is evident. Thank you again. My friends that live in the island will recommend their friends to stay here next time. I walked to the main area of The city each day, about 10 minutes or so. I could go on and on. I will be back to Hilo to see my dearest of friends. Best, Leigh

The house is large with many lovely indoor and outdoor areas to sit and relax. It is located in a quiet residential area close to the main highway 11 which leads to either downtown Hilo or Volcano. The hostess is a native Hawaiian who shared her thoughts on places to visit and dine and was available to us should we require any assistance. She made fresh croissants for our breakfast and the fridge was stocked with complimentary juice, cans of sparkling water, and other nonalcoholic beverages. I was shocked however to discover that there is NO air conditioning in the house, not even the bedroom! While there were ceiling fans in most rooms and portable fans in the bedroom with temperatures in the 80's and humidity in the 70's we found the inside temperatures to be most uncomfortable. In addition, at dusk, the noise from the frogs or insects (I am not sure what they were) in the gardens was so loud that with the ceiling fan in the TV room at full-speed we found we couldn't hear the TV. Luckily I had brought ear plugs or my husband who is sensitive to loud noises couldn't have slept! If loud nocturnal noise and high heat and humidity don't bother you this would be a great place for you to stay in Hilo. If either of these things are of concern, I would recommend you stay elsewhere.

We recently completed a two week vacation in Hawaii. As we had decided to island hop, we were looking for something a little different from our Waikiki high-rise or our Maui Beach Resort for our three night visit to the Big Island. We had opted to stay in Hilo to get a better taste of the quieter, more traditional Hawaii. As a result, my search ended us up booked at Hale Kawehi. It ended up being one of the true highlights of our visit to Hawaii. The Property: This is not a typical house, but a unique property that offers guests a chance to stay in a classic old Hawaiian house. Be assured that you have use of the entire house, as the owner/hostess has separate living quarters behind the house. Your home includes a bedroom with two comfortable twin beds, a full bath, a half bath, a full kitchen, two living rooms, a bar area, a TV area, and finally two glorious outside sitting areas for you to enjoy, and for smokers, a place to light up. Covered parking is also included for any rental. In true Hawaiian tradition, the windows are not glass but are all screened making the outdoors a huge part of the atmosphere in the house. It is a comfortable and unique experience. All amenities are there for cooking your own food, as well as anything else required to ``live`` in the house. A nice touch is you are greeted upon check-in with fresh croissants and fresh juice for weary travelers, and local wine is available for a small fee if you should desire as well. The Owner: We had the opportunity of course to meet Kawehi when we checked in and she was a lovely lady who made us feel very welcome in what can be sometimes a different experience for a lot of people. She is a life long Hawaiian, and well versed on her immediate surroundings in Hilo, as well as with all the Big Island has to offer and beyond. A world traveler, you get the sense right away that she appreciates why you are there, and will do what she can to make your visit special. She is very proud of her family`s home, as is obvious as soon as you meet her. We had the opportunity to meet up with her at different times during our visit, and we left feeling like we had made a new friend. In conclusion, if you are looking for a unique and comfortable place to stay that offers a convenient location to visit Hilo or as a jumping off place for the Big Island, you will not do better than Hale Kawehi. I would not hesitate for a moment to make this our home again during any return visit to Hawaii!!!!! Mahalo

Beautiful house from the mid-1930’s filled with wonderful artifacts and Hawaiiana. Nice kitchen area for in home cooking - pots pans rice cooker etc- Comfynooks for relaxing- great wrap around deck with lounge chairs and a dining table! The garden is lush and creative. There are many cocqui frogs at night so if that bothers you, there is even ears plugs! Our only negative was that due to a plumbing issue my husband could not soak in the tub (for his degenerative disk) altho the shower worked fine.
