Waterfalls cascade through lush rainforest just minutes from downtown, where you'll find the best farmers market on the Big Island. Visit Rainbow Falls early morning when mist creates actual rainbows, then explore the Japanese gardens at Liliuokalani Park during low tide.
Hilo is an older town but it's friendly, has events such as farmers market (best one Saturday and Wednesday). Friday night they have a night market with food truck style food, live music. Fun HH at the Pineapple Grill. It's easy to meet people.

Hilo is a classic Hawaiian town with less over the top tourism compared to Kailua-Kona. It is on the "wet" side of the island, so expect more scattered showers, but also a lusher island vibe. Nice downtown, farmers market. Lots of free parking.

Cool city. Hidden gem like much of the Big Island. Unfortunately, city of Hilo and the Big Island overall gets overlooked since people usually look at maui and Kauai first. But wish I had a few more days there!

A smallish town. Unfortunately because there isn't much around, going out to eat and shop is crowded and takes some time. But if you aren't in a rush, it does have a friendly laid back feeling.

I really like Hilo I really Hilo, it's pretty easy to get around and not nearly as crowded as Kona. There is some excellent food to be had in this town.
"My parents and I rented the cottage for four nights. This was absolutely perfect for our needs and we slept really well. We were able to park our rental car with no problem and the area is loaded with things to see, and do. Restaurants nearby, as well as shopping in town. Many of our stops were 3 to 7 minutes away from the property. This is a much better location than staying up by Volcano. Under 10 minutes to the airport but noise wasn't an issue. Staff was super friendly and flexible to meet our needs. Definitely would recommend to those in a small group that don't want to be separated by rooms in a hotel. "
"This has been one of the most special places I’ve ever been to. The sounds of the forest at night are surreal and can touch your soul. I’ve only spent one night at the cabin but I will never forget my time here.
The cabins are super cute, clean, and comfortable. The short path to the lodge with bathrooms is marked by some torches on the ground at night. The sky cleared up in the middle of the night so I could enjoy the stars while walking to the lodge. AMAZING."
