"Amazing experience, everything was wonderful. Beautiful location in nature, very quiet and relaxing. Dinner by the riverside and breakfast were beautiful, staff very friendly and spoke good English. Place was very clean, our annex room had an open air bath looking onto the river. This was our first ryokan experience and we highly recommend this place."

"My son and I really enjoyed our stay at Ryokan Yamazaki, the staff were incredibly kind and helpful from checking us in, to making sure we ate and helping to order us cabs. We loved staying at a traditional style Japanese home, and the location was up in the north west area of Kyoto away from the crowds and tourists which we appreciated, and the beauty of the mountains and neighborhoods. I recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience a traditional Japanese stay."

"This hotel and town were a highlight of my trip! Nestled in the mountains next to the river this place is like a movie. By day tourists flock but at night its quiet and has a peaceful moonlit romantic feel. I took a rickshaw through bamboo garden (the only way to do it properly) I took a boat ride down the river (easy train to the meeting point), I rented the bike from the hotel and cruised around during the evenings enjoying the river and sounds and chilling quiet surroundings. Family mart close by open 24/7 , food places close early I found a few closing at 8/9 pm using map app. At the end of the street walking towards monkey place, you will see a mysterious stone staircase. I walked up it it was a pathway to the mountain shrine. On the walkway tons of monkeys who snuck away from the park I watched them and never went into the park! Win Win Hotel."

"Whatever the rating system is in Japan, this resort would be a 5 star. This is a beautiful property that is decorated in traditional Japanese style. You are greeted with traditional Japanese tea and cookies. My children loved the complimentary ice cream in the lounge, of course. The rooms have tatami flooring but we had both regular beds and futons prepared for us on the floor. Our room had both a soaking cypress bath and an outdoor onsen. The property has a beautiful public onsen and private ones that you can book as well. A higher end Japanese hotel like this provides yukata for wearing around the property (less formal than a kimono) as well as sleeping clothes. In Japan, there are shoes for outside (your shoes), inside (slippers), inside-outside (garden shoes), and the bathroom (different slippers). We had both dinner and breakfast in our stay both kaiseki style and each meal was jaw-droppingly beautiful and delicious. When we had rice leftover from our dinner, our attendant prepared them as onigiri, which we took with us the next day. The staff were also very understanding of our limited Japanese and were very gracious in every way. This resort is a bit remote. They do provide a shuttle to Kameoka subway station, which is about a 30min subway ride to Kyoto station. We brought our teenaged children who enjoyed the food and the ambience but to get good value, you really need to appreciate onsens at a high end place like this."

"It was really convenient to have the onsen onsite and it was lovely! The room on the 4th floor was very outdated but clean. Tip of onsen- they have “outfits” at the front. Red for women, blue for men with different sizing. I had to ask about what size would fit best since I was unaware of Japanese sizing. 😅 Breakfast was amazing! Would recommend to stay again!"
