The location of the hotel and the size of the hotel room is good, but the actual room was in an ok condition, could be better, but I know they reason for the non-maintenance, but the problem is that the bathroom smelled of cigarette smoke even though it was a non smoking room. The staff at reception was pretty nice, but when I called ahead a couple times before my stay, they were rather rude. The amenities were basic and usable. Overall, I just hope they sort out their hotel politics soon because it's such a shame to see a famous and grand hotel get reduced to that state.

As noted by others , unfortunately , a once, very majestic hotel ( is only 25yo ) is now very dated and in need of major refit. However , the rooms are large ,clean and the bed very comfortable ( if you like a firm bed ). Nothing else compatible for the location and price

The staff were great however the hotel itself is dated and all furnishing are showing signs of wear and tear. The second elevator giving access to my room 614 was out of order for my 7 days stay.

Merdeka was in a good location for the touristy spots. However, the staff didn’t really give the feel that they were happy to have us there. They did their job, but there weren’t a lot of smiles or helpful gestures of any kind. Beautiful lobby, but the rest of the building was very dated and in rough shape…great need of a makeover. Price was good, but in this case you kind of got what you paid for. The hotel restaurant and massage parlor were not bad. Over-all I had a rather “meh” feeling, and would most likely opt for a different place if we come to Kuching again (which we will most likely do).

Though the location was great the apartment suite room condition was in poor maintenance: the kitchen had minuscule appliances/serve-ware/cutleries; broken kitchen dish drying rack; water/leak-stain in the carpets in living room and dining room (one of the living room stain was even still wet when we arrived); in the main master bedroom there's a mold-stained ceiling leak above the sink; leaky water taps; mold/blacken corking in all the bathrooms/sinks; some non-working light bulbs etc. Generally not maintained.

Glad I chose this hotel because it was close to a shopping mall and close to a museum I wanted to visit. Room was clean, bed was comfortable, everything worked as it should and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
