The Famous Blue House - Alfama

An icon of central Lisbon's Alfama district , this 3 floor, 2 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom house combines modern luxury with historic charm. Both bedrooms are en-suite with the top floor including an amazing private balcony overlooking the river. Fully refurbished in 2016 with A/C and heating on each level, wood and marble finishings and two high volume showers. The house is located just a short stroll from the Lisbon Cathedral, the Fado Museum, Sao Jorge Castle and the waterfront.

An independent townhouse located in the center of Lisbon, in the heart of Alfama district, the most historical and famous district of Lisbon. The home is walking distance from Baixa (Lisbon City Center), San Jorge Castle, the Santa Apolónia Train Station, the famous flea market and many other tourist attractions.

The house has three (3) floors, with two (2) bedrooms and two and half (2.5) bathrooms. There is also a private balcony with views of Alfama to the river. The home is equipped with heating and air conditioning throughout.

The first floor includes a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, living room with large sofa bed, and half bathroom. The second floor has a bedroom with double bed, private bathroom with shower. The top floor has a Queen size bed and a full bathroom with shower. On this floor there is a balcony with river view along with a desk / working nook.

The view is outstanding and you can actually hear Fado from the balcony during some evenings.

The house offers free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV and cable channels.

Alfama is an excellent choice for travelers who are interested to know and live in a typical Lisbon neighborhood, walking in the city and getting to know all the historical center. There are all kinds of public transportation options nearby, including the famous Tram Electrico 28.

Guests have full access to the property. The three (3) floor property has living and sleeping space on the ground floor, bedroom with ensuite bathroom on 2nd floor and bedroom with ensuite bathroom and private balcony on 3rd floor.

Please note that the home is only accessible by foot, as the Alfama neighborhood is pedestrian only. Car access about 200m from the home.

Old town but not quite as advertised

We were not aware until final check-in instructions that cars cannot access the area; we were dropped two cobble-stoned hills away with all the luggage from the 5 weeks of golfing prior to our week in Lisbon. We would have chosen a different space if that was clear up front. That being said, we enjoyed staying in Alfama and the location was great. Unfortunately, a prior tenant left the place with many broken bits that the remote landlord was not aware of; about half the items were replaced but only on the 5th day of a 7 night stay....

NOT AS ADVERTISED- BUYER BEWARE!!

House looks like a true gem in the photos, but is ANYTHING BUT in reality. Worst local rental experience I have ever had. The best I can say is my family seems to have survived without a trip to the hospital. A short list of what we found: 1) Mold on wall in kitchen, in all three bathrooms. 2) Water dripping from the tiles in downstairs half-bath, and very wet plaster in ceiling of same bath. 3) Glass door to middle floor bath falling off hinges. 4) Glass door to top floor bath chipping; glass shard found on bathroom floor. 5) Second bedroom doorknob falling off, fell off. 6) Ground floor half-bath door would not close nor latch/ lock. 7) Missing air conditioner controller (were two controllers, for three units). 8) Stair rail wobbly on middle floor level. 9) Ground floor lights did not work, just flickered when we tried to turn them on...was there a short due to all the damp???? 10) OVERWHELMING odor of mold and damp (obviously, if you've been reading the other issues). 11) And, on the final day...COCKROACHES! IN THE KITCHEN AND IN THE TOP FLOOR BEDROOM. I reported a number of these issues immediately to the Owner upon entering the house and received completely dismissive response. Owner simply stated that the house was in 'fully operational' condition. Four different VRBO agents begged to differ, especially after receiving nearly 20 photos with evidence of my objections. I also sent videos to VRBO. AVOID this rental and this Owner AT ALL COSTS!

Cocktoach and and mold smell

Photos much more beautiful than reality. Very humid and smell of mold. The washer is flowing, the fridge is not cold enough and there are plenty of Cockroach! ! Disgusting! The cleanliness really leaves something to be desired and the apartment was not ready when we arrived. Matteo, the host, does not respond to our messages. I certainly won't recommend!

Mid stay departure due to pests

On our last stay in Portugal, we had an unfortunate run in with roaches. Lots of them in the street - and on our second day, we found the next generation ones in the house :( The owner agreed to refunds us the last nights so we moved out promptly. Otherwise, though cramped, the place would’ve been a good place for the adventurous - right in the middle of the Alfama district, close to everything.

Great location for the Alfama experience!

An excellent home base while exploring Lisbon. A short walk to food and great entertainment in all directions. Big shout out to the Sao Rafael fado restaurant, just a 2 minute walk down the alley. There three levels in the home, so this is not the place for any one of poor health. I I would gladly revisit this property..

Quirky, authentic, local, interesting

We loved our stay in Alfama. This property might not be for everyone, but if you love authentic local housing, low tourism, more local, colorful, unusual, European, then this is for you. This is a true local community. The housing is compact but has most everything you need. The location is right in the middle of the Alfama district with easy access to all parts of Lisbon, easy access to train and subway. We did make a mistake assuming we’d arrived to Santa Apolonia but we’d arrived to Rossi…and it was dark and late, but we had total comfort and safety. We took a cab to the Museo de Fado—great instructions from the host. We loved the access, the real, unspoiled location. Local means the area is perhaps not as clean as some would like, But it’s got great food, great atmosphere and we loved it. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen had basic provisions (be sure to stop at the local store for a few things prior to arrival). We truly enjoyed being deep in the Alfama district. There’s not another experience like it!

Alfama during Lisboa Festival!

The location was amazing for the access by train, all the principal interests neer from the home and the quantity of restaurants around. We were there during the Lisboa Fest 2022 in June : pretty nice if you want to have fun, not really if you wanna sleep! The house is not really isolated for the noise and one of the principal scene is just 15 meters away so a lot of festivalers are coming for a tranquill pee spot ou drinking. Globally it's a really cute house and we loved to be there!

Great few days!

This property met all our needs. The location was great, the washing machine was perfect, the bedrooms with their own bathrooms was ideal! Just FYI for future renters, the A/C units are wonderful to have but the one on the top floor doesn't work sufficiently for all the sun streaming in the doors. Even with the shades pulled, the heat was more than most. Also, the stairs are VERY steep in the apartment. If you have heavy luggage or bags, this would be difficult. The showers had wonderful hot water and pressure and the beds were very comfortable. I would stay here again!

Covered all our needs.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at this apartment. Everything we needed was there. It is in a great location for "young at heart" with parties in the various courtyards every night. However, I would not recommend this apartment for anyone with health issues due to the long walk uphill from the street to get to the house.

Petite maison bien centrée

Petite maison sur 3 étages avec 2 chambres possédant une salle de bain attenante. La maison est équipée avec ce qu'il faut. A l'intérieur il fait assez humide, c'est un peu le désavantage mais en même temps, on y passe pas énormément de temps. Elle est très bien située dans le quartier de l'Alfama. NOus y avons passé un super séjour.
