Forest of Dean Romantic & Rustic Holiday Cottage
Up a forest track, the third of four properties with forest outlook immediately to the front and forest walks right from the doorstep, The Old Chapel has been sympathetically converted to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. It oozes character. It is situated on the edge of the village of Yorkley (population approx 1,000). The cottage is 80% pine clad (walls and ceilings) giving it a very warm and relaxing feel throughout. It has been furnished to give a 'home from home' feel all in wood and/or neutral colours. The general atmosphere is rustic, with mostly wooden floors and brick window cills, it is something 'a bit different'. Our favourite time to stay in the Forest is the first week in June when all the trees and plants are newly out and the view from our sofas is stunning. There are two bedrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. Both rooms have a double bed, so the cottage accommodates four people comfortably. The upstairs bedroom is on a mezzanine overlooking the lounge. There is no door to this room. The downstairs bedroom is just off the lounge and could affect light sleepers. The only things that wake you up is birdsong! The lounge/dining room is large, and looks larger because it has 14 foot high ceilings, mostly covered in wood panelling. We have three sofas in the lounge, all of which are comfortable - who doesn't want to relax on holiday? The beast of a wood burner in the lounge gives a very relaxed feel in the evenings, along with some candles which we keep there. Very romantic! The kitchen is small but very well stocked as we like cooking (and eating). There is a dishwasher and a 6 foot tall fridge/freezer - more than enough to store a week's food for a family. The garden is small, but there is a forest on the doorstep. We have two reclining garden chairs in the back garden and a small BBQ should you wish to 'eat out'. We hate holiday places that have no character, and have tried really hard to make sure that our one does . It is very well furnished so there should not be anything missing for your stay, but if there is, please let us know! If you are bringing a little one with you, we keep a travel cot, stairgate and high chair in the cottage. A really romantic place to escape, leave all your troubles behind and just chill!

Absolutely loved our break at the Old Chapel. Great communications with Doreen prior to arriving and the property itself was amazing. Lovely quiet location and was very comfortable, also a lot bigger than we were expecting. Highly recommend
Beautiful property, lovely and homely, everything we needed for a great weekend away, so close to first off Dean we enjoyed exploring, then coming home to a nice warm fire and relaxing evening.Would recommend
Although the sheathed could have been better, we had a nice and very comfortable stay in the chapel. The furniture is very good and the bed we used was excellent.
We had a wonderful stay, everything was immaculate, it felt so homely with all provisions you can possibly imagine for a perfect stay.Doreen the host, provided us with precise instructions on checking in, and made herself available for any enquiries.

The property was in an ideal location. Quiet yet only 10 minutes from a local town and 10 minutes from Forest of Dean. Easy to get to and easy to find.
The property itself had everything we need, it was clean fully stocked and very comfortable.
Host answered all our messages within minutes.
Very happy overall and would recommend.
Doreen is delightful, very helpful and answers queries, questions very quickly…. Very nice lady. The Old Chapel was beautiful, cozy, homely and had everything that you could possibly need for your stay. So much thought has been put into the decor, the renters needs whilst away from home…. Such a wonderful experience. The description of the chapel was spot on and the wonderful wooded location was not exaggerated at all, we experienced, rabbits, squirrels, sheep literally just outside the doors….. we were able weather wise to sit outside and take it all in and savour the moments. The neighbours were friendly and informative also. We have been so taken up by this picturesque place that we have also booked up for a week in April 2024. Can’t come soon enough!
We had a wonderful break in the converted Chapel. The property was excellent in every way. We especially enjoyed lighting up the log burner after a walk in the forest which is right outside your door!
Doreen was an excellent host who communicated very well, prompt, helpful and incredibly friendly. The old chapel was heaven the only noise you heard when you woke was bird song.
The level of comfort was far superior to anywhere else we have stayed. The old chapel was equipped with everything you needed and more including a folder with anything you needed to know and more.
The neighbours are super friendly and everyone stop to chat. The surrounding area was beautiful and peaceful. If you want to go somewhere when life was more simple and unwind and relax then the old chapel is the place to go. It was the most amazing wonderful Christmas break.

Disliked: Cleanliness
Not tidy and very rude Host
We came across a few items while we were staying in the cottage . These are as follows .
Cleanliness
- bathroom shower plug was full of hair.
- Quite dusty in places
Bathroom mirror was dirty
- Tap in kitchen was dirty
- Metal in bathroom had scum on
- Rusty Mirrors
- Dirty bathroom shelf
- Rusty bath plug
- When bath was turned on black rust came out of it.
Kitchen
Kitchen cupboard when you come in stinks of damp. The cutlery stinks of damp. It put me of cooking as it really badly smells. I had to wash cutlery before I used as it smells
Out of date complementary biscuits.
- the biscuits that were provided were 2 months out of date. 2 went off in June and 2 went off in July. The milk that was in the basket was also out of date. My partner had a biscuit and cup of tea with the milk and the biscuit and had a bad belly the next day. He didn't realize until he checked date next day ( I have pics of biscuits out of date)
I messaged the host when we got back as i know she did not live near. She was very rude and said all my pictures i could of got all off the internet. All my pictures are time stamped and it says the location so they were taken at the cottage.
The host was well aware of the damp smell as in the cupboards she has things to cover up damp smell.
I messaged the Host and said i should be compensated some how. She asked my opinion and i said i would like some money back and she said im a bully and my behavior is unacceptable. She also said she will tell everyone on VRBO that im a bully as i complained about trivial things, Avoid at all cost.
We really enjoyed our stay in this property, very comfortable beds, and an enormously well equipped kitchen. The fact that you can walk and look straight into the forest from the French doors made it all the more enjoyable.
Communication with the owner was really good too, with very quick replies. We would definitely return.
Excellent place to stay if you want to chill out. Unfortunately one of our party had a bad knee so couldn't make the most of the forest walks right on the doorstep.
There is a pub that serves nice food in walking distance.
Property had everything you could ask for and was very clean, had a lovely bathroom, log fire and lots of character.
One if the bedrooms is on the mezzanine floor and 'open' but was very roomy.
If you want a relaxing place to stay would highly recommend.
Comfortable cottage in a secluded and beautiful setting
When we first arrived, we were extremely impressed with the spacious layout of the place. The cottage had everything from a tumbledryer to a huge TV with Netflix and Amazon Prime. The house was extremely comfortable and warm with games, books, an Alexa and a plethora of films. The entire family slept well in the spacious bedrooms, and there was plenty of natural light. My family are very particular about bathrooms, but the lavatory in the house was extremely nice in the sense that it had a shower, a bathtub and in general... nice facilities. Leaflets were supplied for lots of local landmarks and pubs. Finally, the forest outside was extremely picturesque. There are many beautiful nature walks a stone's throw from the house. Everything one would need could be found in the cottage, and we are very satisfied.
Thank you for such an amazing stay!

Lovely property with great facilities and just right for exploring the Forest of Dean. The owner has made available a lot of information about the area which was a great help. We ate well and slept well and enjoyed the log fire.
We had a great stay at the Old Chapel. Doreen was really helpful in the lead up. The house is fully equipped with absolutely everything you could need and it’s really comfortable and spacious. The house is run with guests’ comfort in mind and the attention to detail made us feel very welcome. The house was absolutely spotless with minute care to covid precautions whilst also feeling very relaxed at the same time. The location is stunning and we will be back. Thank you Doreen for a lovely stay.
The old chapel is warm and cosy and has everything you need for your stay. You have the forest of dean on your doorstep, a 2 minute walk to local pub nags head, the staff are friendly and food fantastic. There is also a postoffice and small shop 5 minutes walking. Super! Thank you doreen we had a great time.
Lovely property and well equipped in a superb location for walking. Lots to do with in a short drive, Tintern Abbey, Symonds Yat and the Sculpture Trail to name but a few.
Already planning a return trip
Absolutely everything you need for a perfect break.
The Old Chapel is home from home and right on the edge of the forest. The owner is so helpful and went out of her way to find places I could take my Mother in her wheelchair.
Can't praise it highly enough.
This is a lovely place walk out the door straight into the forest of dean. sheep roam past the door, wild boar grazing beside road and deer running through the woods and everything within a short drive .
The fireplace was great for the evenings and shower I wanted to take home
Thank you for a lovely stay
The property is unique and very well equipped with everything you need, it’s home from home. The location is peaceful and relaxing, it’s perfect for discovering the Forest of Dean, walks are literally right from the door! how amazing is that...
