The Hume Hotel is simply magical! From the historic elements, to the variety of dining options, the Hume is a little slice of heaven. We were visiting Nelson on our honeymoon, and the staff was kind enough to upgrade our room to a double suite. We will absolutely stay there again on our next visit to Nelson!

Overall, it was a good stay. The hotel is well-maintained on the main level (originally built in 1898) and the upper levels are tastefully renovated and clean. When we checked in, we were told Expedia had oversold our room (2Q suite with a sofabed) and that we would be placed in a 2Q suite room. This was not ideal since we are a family of 6. We asked for a cot which they accommodated. I asked if I would be refunded for the $30 room cost difference and the lady said "it would be looked after" (it never was refunded). When I checked on their direct site, I noticed the suite with a sofabed was still available. The General Store restaurant located on the main level offered delicious food and great service. We went back for dessert after enjoying a walk downtown and our previous waitress recognized us and again, was pleasant. Upon checkout, we were told we had a charge of over $80 without explanation of what it was. I refused to pay it and asked what it was. They said it was because of our extra guests and I said we would have walked out had we known we would be charged for our children to stay in the room (an extra 30% of original price). They ended up removing the charge. Note: they charge over $20 per person (including infants!) for any guests over 2 staying in a room.

We have been staying at The Hume for a number of years every winter. We always used to book a basic room and it always included breakfast. This time I chose a bigger more expensive room. How disappointing the room had frosted glass so no view and when opened the window to get some fresh air the reason for the frosted window became apparent the room looked into the machinery area, which was extremely noisy. So after a terrible nights sleep we went down for breakfast and were told it would be extra even though our friends who booked at the same got there’s included. When I queried this they said it was because I booked with Expedia. When I booked on line I was sure I was on the hotels website. Anyway when I mentioned this at checkout I was told it was all my fault and go and argue with Expedia. As for the room apparently if I had of rung them they would have told me that looked on to the machinery shed. So why do charge extra for a bad room I thought by paying extra I would have got a better room.
